Intellisense Systems, Inc. is developing a Propellant Health Monitoring (PHEM) system which is an ultrasonic sensor that detects cracks in propellant grain and transmits the relevant data through a sealed rocket motor case. The distinguishing features of PHEM are its thin form factor (<2 mm), ability to conform to a cylindrical surface, ultralow power consumption (10 year lifetime w/o battery replacement), and implementation of a communication link operating through the metal wall. Happy Publication Day to Brian Laslie and his latest book "Fighting from Above: A Combat History of the US Air Force"! https://lnkd.in/gMay4iY4 The story of the United States Air Force (USAF) stretches back to aerial operations prior to the First World War—well before the USAF became a separate service—and looks forward to a new era of airpower in space. "Fighting from Above" presents a concise account of this expansive history, offering a new perspective on how the air forces of the United States created an independent way of warfare over time. From the earliest battles of the USAF’s predecessor organizations to its modern incarnation, Brian D. Laslie identifies four distinct and observable ways of war that developed over four distinct epochs. Beginning with the development of early air power (1906–1941), he highlights the creation of roles and missions, with bombardment theory and practice ascendant. An era of strategic dominance (1942–1975) followed in which the ideas of strategic bombardment ruled the air force; when such notions were unceremoniously proven false during the Vietnam-era conflicts, a period of tactical ascendancy (1975–2019) began. Finally, Laslie considers the current environment, where much of the story of the USAF remains unwritten as it grapples with the prospects and challenges posed by drones and the U.S. Space Force. While detailing combat operations, "Fighting from Above" also pays close attention to technology, politics, rivalries, logistics, policy, organization, equipping, and training. Thorough, concise, and innovative in its approach, it is an authoritative, exceptionally readable history of the development of American airpower.

We not only need to re-write the military doctrine, we need to update the Law of Armed Conflict by updating the Hague Convention with a protocol addressing tech and AI enabled weapons systems and the use of the cyber platforms as weapons and the cyber domain as a theater of war. We also need to update the Geneva Convention with a new protocol dedicated to protection of non-combatants in the tech/cyber/AI domains of warfare. We need to do this for two reasons. First so that for our troops the guiderails for engagement are clear and unmistakable. First time use of new weapons systems may have unforeseen impacts. We want to make sure our troops have rules to follow and that those rules can protect them from any blowback should any unforeseen impacts occur why operating within the lawful parameters. This will also allow them to act quicker without hesitation because of fears of what might happen to them as a result of the decisions they make on the battlefield.  Second we want to protect the nation and our narrative of events. If our employment of tech, cyber and AI weapons is overwhelmingly successful, our enemies will attempt to use lawfare and cognitive warfare to hijack the narrative and portray the U.S. tech/cyber/AI operations as immoral and unlawful. Look at how over time much of the world now sees Hiroshima and Nagasaki as immoral and un-lawful acts of war (though their outrage does not stop them from seeking their own nuclear weapons even today). The best way to get ahead of this is to write the laws before we employ the weapons so we can pre-empt the inevitable legal and narrative attacks. Third we want to have a means of ensuring our allies are on the same page as us. It is inevitable that their acts good and bad will also paint us regardless of our ability to control or influence those allies. And to the extent any of our enemies actually do have some degree of respect for international law and treaties it will help enforce reciprocal conduct by them.
