This month, we are looking at the McCloskey Environmental ESS-300 Tracked Shredder. Introducing this machine is Agg-Pro's recycling and waste management expert, Dean Ashton. "The ESS-300 shredder can be used across a variety of waste streams, and can be used as a primary or secondary shredder where the ability to change the screen size can allow you to size output material. "The ESS-300 stands out due to its rotating knives on a single, hydraulically driven shaft. This means the incoming material is constantly moving, which helps prevent bridging. Better solutions are needed for this systemic problem. Building functioning waste and recycling infrastructure is critical as are ways to minimise waste generation in the first place.

No one's favourite version of R&R, but an essential part of a clean, functioning city. We pick up glass, plastics & cans, paper & cardboard, food scraps and general waste from around 63,000 households each week. And Hamilton, we produce a lot. In just a year, we put in our bins: - 3 million kg of glass - 3 million kg of food waste for composting - 7.5 million kg of other recycling in yellow kerbside bins - and nearly 16 million kg of general waste. And that’s not to mention the waste produced by our commercial and business sector, and the stuff you drop off at the resource recovery centre after a spring clean! 📣 Calling out all West Hartford residents 📣 Did you know that our town officials are trying to reduce waste by adopting Unit-Based Pricing (UBP) combined with food scrap collection? Why is this important? In communities with UBP programs (also known as PAYT), residents are charged for residential trash based on the amount they throw away. This encourages recycling and gives you the power to control your waste generation. Moreover, if the town offers food scrap collection, you can divert your food scraps from trash to produce less waste, contributing to a cleaner environment. According to the EPA, a UBP policy can help local officials advance strategic waste management goals of reducing waste, increasing recycling, and controlling waste disposal costs. Time is running out! West Hartford's Waste Working group has been tirelessly working and is now in the final stages before the Town Council votes on June 25th. The group is proposing a one-year town-wide pilot that would introduce food scrap collection to the town services and implement UBP. During the one-year pilot, the town could provide one free trash and one free food scrap bag per week; additional bags would cost about $1. We need your voice! E-waste has no place in landfill – especially when we have the technology and processes to ethically manage and recycle it.   WA recently joined Victoria and the ACT in banning e-waste from landfill, marking another positive step toward tackling the war on waste.   The WA Government stated:   “It is important to increase the recovery of valuable materials in many electrical items which are lost when sent to landfill. The aim is also to protect the environment from hazardous materials contained in e-waste and protect people.”   We recognised this more than a decade ago and have built our proprietary, end-to-end, large scale recycling process to divert up to 100% of end of life electronics and avoid the detrimental after-effects of inappropriate handling.   For these state-based bans to be truly effective, we are calling for a national, system-wide approach. "Potential future phases of the e-waste to landfill ban in WA are likely to include more items once material recovery pathways are established. For instance, future bans may be brought into effect once the Australian Government has committed to developing a regulatory scheme to reduce waste from small electrical products and solar photovoltaic systems." Still a ways to go for reuse as intended and repair to be considered so that the nation moves beyond recycling and downcycling. 🧠💭 Did you know? Toledo City Council and the Board of Lucas County Commissioners approved of plans to construct a materials recovery facility (MRF) at the site of the former South & Western Landfill in Toledo. ❓🤔 What does this mean? A materials recovery facility (MRF) would help us recycle in a more economic and efficient manner. Currently, our recycling materials that are put out at the curb or collected at drop-off locations are transferred 90 miles away in Oberlin to be sorted. This single-stream MRF will drastically reduce our county-wide carbon footprint by keeping our process local. Why is this important? In 2023, we opened a new landfill cell to responsibly manage waste, however, somethings can be reused to save space in our landfill. 🍌 Food scraps can be composted at one of our three local sites. ♻️ Materials like paper, glass and plastic can be recycled for reuse.
