Echion Technologies in Cambridge, a world leading supplier of niobium anodes, is working with Taiwan-based GUS Technology – a specialist in lithium-ion batteries, pouch cells, and energy storage systems. https://lnkd.in/enk-KPSQ An MoU was signed at the inauguration of 格斯科技 GUS TECHNOLOGY’s new gigafactory in Taiwan and marks the start of a deep collaboration between the companies. The MoU provides GUS with secured availability of Echion Technologies’ niobium-based anode material, XNO® and access to Echion’s electrochemistry support for cell design. Benjamin Ting, chief commercial officer at Echion, said: “The official recognition of our relationship is an exciting step on our journey with GUS. There is clear mutual benefit in our collaboration which will help us to deliver the industrial battery solutions of the future. “Echion benefits from GUS’ experience and reputation for high-quality, fast-charging, and long cycle life lithium-ion cells and products. GUS benefits from a new, differentiated battery material and our expertise in its use.    “GUS and Echion share common ground in their desire to quickly deploy high performance batteries globally and this is a significant step towards that.” The agreement will also allow Echion and GUS to provide early access to battery cells and modules powered by XNO® for a range of original equipment manufacturers and end users. Europe-based sodium-ion battery technology firms Tiamat and Altris have secured a total of €29 million (US$31.5 million) in new funding, from a fundraise round and the Swedish state respectively. Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technologies Office announced the Critical Materials Accelerator which provides up to $10M in funding to prototype and mature technologies or processes to address critical material challenges in high impact areas. Accelerator projects will feature innovation and foster industry partnerships that build and transform domestic critical materials supply chains. Congratulations to Altris AB and Northvolt for reaching a hugely important milestone in their development of #sodiumion batteries, reaching 160 Wh/kg - now level with more basic #lithiumion chemistries used in stationary storage applications! I worked on sodium-ion battery projects for over 4 years, and whilst this energy density isn't going to trouble LFP or NMC anytime soon, it's hugely significant it's occurred with a cell manufacturer like Northvolt who has the #scalability and #routetomarket to rollout this technology on a megawatt-hour and then gigawatt-hour level. As with all battery news, it's important to take it with a pinch of salt (pardon the pun) and note no cycle life performance has been mentioned, or estimated $/kWh cost, both which will be key criteria to see this technology adopted in volume. https://lnkd.in/eJvGqNYq

This collaboration combines the strengths of these companies in stack technology, system engineering, and production. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed, with a full agreement expected by June 2024. The goal is to scale up production and reduce costs, contributing to industrial #decarbonization and the net-zero target by 2050. SolydEra’s efficient stack technology, Bosal’s engineering systems, and VDL’s manufacturing expertise are key to this effort.
