My recent bike accident, followed by surgery to repair my clavicle, forced me to take a step back and slow down. Despite the physical challenges and pain, it was also a rewarding time of recovery and rejuvenation. Taking a breather allowed me to appreciate family, friends, and the beauty around me. This past week, I have spent an hour most mornings sitting in my backyard, just being present with my inspiring surroundings. It was extremely healing for me. In times of intense focus on work and personal projects, it's crucial to remember the importance of slowing down to restore both mind and body. Stephen Covey's concept of "sharpening the saw" resonates deeply with me, emphasizing the need for self-care and rejuvenation. Recovery doesn't always have to be linked to a physical injury. It's essential to prioritize time for restoration to prepare ourselves for future growth. Let's proactively take the time to rejuvenate and restore. Yelling at my father-in-law is a bad thing. But it happened.   My father-in-law recently fell, and he needed hip replacement surgery. But prior to this he was already in rehab for a broken knee. Everyone in the family had been so worried and had been scrambling left and right. Before this second fall, countless medical professionals advised him on how to move to avoid another fall and what rehab to do to strengthen his body.  But he didn’t listen. Then he shattered his hip. And he did not listen, not to rehab, not to doctors, not to the aids. My wife, Laura, was at her wits end and asked me to intervene. So, I had to have that tough conversation with him. I had to reemphasize our common goal, for him to get better and to minimize the impact on his wife (my mother-in-law) and Laura. That’s it. Let's face it, no one loves a confrontation. But those uncomfortable talks are the glue that holds family and even teams at work together.  Tough conversations aren't about being mean; they're about caring enough to be honest. It's about valuing your team and the goal enough to address challenges head-on. And when I think of this I think of one of my favorite reads, Kim Scott’s “Radical Candor.” So, the next time a tricky situation arises, remember: a little discomfort can lead to a stronger, more united team. Before my spine surgery, I never used to slow down. My focus was always on the next goal, the next accomplishment, the next place to be. Even jogging, something I enjoy, was something to tick off on the to-do list. I believed I was living life to the fullest. Until my injury happened. After my surgery, I had to slow everything down for my recovery ❤️🩹. I took a step back to rest. Reevaluated what matters. Spent even more precious and quality time with my girls. And I go on slow walks which helped me appreciate the nature around me. When I first noticed the plants on the sidewalks on my walks, I realised I was living life on a bullet train before. I got to destinations fast, but the journey was a blur. When I slowed down and be more mindful and intentional with my time, every moment became meaningful. Now, I actively shift my focus from, “what's next?” to “what impact can I make now?” This injury not only deepened my soul, it also opened my eyes.  Sometimes, slowing down is the way to move forward. It helps us see things more clearly, and ultimately, be more effective in life. Overcoming adversity can be a powerful catalyst for growth. I recently underwent ACL surgery and just nine months later, I successfully completed the Cooper River Bridge Run 10K with a time that would have impressed myself a decade ago. During my rehab process, I learned to accept help and be comfortable with sitting still, which taught me a lot about myself. I'm especially grateful for those who helped me along the way. For those dealing with injuries, family stress, or any of the complexities of life - you got this! Remember that accepting help and taking time to heal can be just as important as pushing through the pain. Now, I'm left with the question, what's next? Perhaps a half marathon is in my future? When you reflect on the past year, do you look for your progress or "compare and despair?" Personally, this time last year, I was on a scooter after foot surgery, working on my CMO career, and developing my physician coaching business. I am so thankful to NOT be on a scooter; also to be progressing and enjoying both my CMO position and private physician coaching clients! We also added a franchise to our list of things to do! Our family continues to have struggles that don't go away; but we continue to face them together, with love and lots of imperfections! Be gentle with yourself as you examine both sides of your past year; and consider anything you would like to "change up" for 2024.
