Happy Friday everyone! Another busy week for me and one in which discussions about #skills needed to support the NI Economy was very much in focus. Today's panel discussion during the NI Diagnostics ABC event, hosted by Health Innovation Research Alliance Northern Ireland (HIRANI), highlighted the following: 1. Addressing skills gaps must be a shared collaborative effort by industry, academia and the public sector. 2. Impactful Outreach to students so that they fully understand industry roles is essential - this will not only enrich and contextualise their learning experiences, but also broaden horizons and create opportunities for the future. 3. The NI Life Sciences ecosystem is special and vibrant with so many talented people (like Richard Kennedy pictured below 😊) and innovative organisations working to help patients and improve outcomes. Just attended an enlightening "Last Lecture" by Mr. Ti Hwei How, Vice President, International Oncology, AstraZeneca. The topic - "What’s our Why?" delved deep into the evolving healthcare landscape, locally and globally. Here are my key takeaways: 1️⃣ Pharmacists in the Age of Advancements: In the era of evolving therapeutics and AI, where do pharmacists stand? Mr. How prompted us to reflect on our role amidst these healthcare advancements. It's about staying at the forefront, adapting, and driving positive change. 2️⃣ Redefining Community Care: With Singapore's healthcare landscape rapidly changing, the "3 Beyonds" and the Healthier SG initiative bring a shift from hospital-centric care to community-focused wellness. As pharmacists, we need to define our role in community care beyond medicine reconciliation. It's about proactive involvement in preventive health strategies. 3️⃣ Climate Change & Healthcare: An unexpected but crucial point – the impact of climate change on healthcare, specifically in recycling efforts. I am part of a working group (Considerations for DCT implementation), within the PACT-Project* - a group which is committed to advancing the framework for decentralised clinical trials in Denmark by collaborating closely with authorities, public and private partners, patients, and researchers.
