Dear LinkedIn Family, This was my response after a GO BLUE! from Rich Varona on LinkedIn.... I agree! No one wants to see anyone targeted and accused of something that may or not be true, as gathering all of the facts before the accusations and assumptions start flying around is the best approach, as getting things wrong and assuming what was and/or what was not done and/or what did and/or did not happen may lead to egg on one's or people's faces, which who really wants this, no one, in general does and I feel like we all can agree on this. Also, learning about someone's true colors in the face of adversity, specifically the naysayers, whom I will personally refrain from naming anyone specific, but if you want to name specific people in the comments, then, this is your choice. The naysayers were not very wise, as sometimes silence is truly golden and silence before the truth comes out seems now, after important facts have emerged, prudent and wise. Business deals, relationships, and public perceptions are, at times, fragile and can be potentially easily lost by careless words. As we all have recently seen and heard many careless words that were spoken, printed, and conveyed. Unfortunately, many people chose to discuss things in a more public manner and spewed forth inaccurate and false speculations, which were published in some fashion for all to read. When something false is written, spoken, and communicated in a public arena by someone about a particular person and/or people, in general, the person and/or these people, who/whom were wronged by this someone's false ovations and fallacious cries of impropriety and who and/or whom this someone felt that a particular person and/or these people exhibited the appearance of unscrupulousness may not always go in your favor, which is what we all have recently witnessed. I'd like to conclude that no one and no group of people will ever forget when someone and/or some people falsely accuse a person and/or people of something that they actually did not do. In my life, this has happened to me and I used my anger as fuel, which motivated me tremendously. In the words of Kelley Levis, who is a sister of Will Levis, who was drafted as the 33rd overall NFL draft pick in 2023, Michigan, I say to you, "Now let's show'em". Have an amazing day!!! Not sure if I'm supposed to laugh or cry, as one of the metaphors in my book ("The Age of Junk Politics") became a reality at the RNC, with Hulk Hogan lauding Trump as the, "toughest of them all". "We’re Playing at Different Games. And this Game We Can’t Win To bring in a new metaphor, the objective of a sports team might be to win the game through athletic excellence and teamwork. But the objective (and value) of the sport is much greater: to provide entertainment, to celebrate excellence, to bring people together with a sense of unity and belonging while experiencing the sport. (Certainly just getting the game results without a chance to watch the game doesn’t bring much true value). It is understood among athletes as they play that they do also have a responsibility to the value of the sport as they play. Athletes are trained on good ‘sportsmanship’ (an unfortunately gendered-sounding word), as they learn the sport. Conversely, if players resort to cheating, misconduct, or exploiting loopholes—such as using performance-enhancing drugs or manipulating the rules—it not only diminishes the game's integrity but also discourages genuine talent and erodes public interest over time. The crisis of today’s politics is that one side is trying its best to win at all costs by playing Moneyball in its strategy, while the other side has turned the game into the World Wrestling Federation (now the WWE) version of sport, up to and including the dramatic spectacle of hairstyling of their preferred ‘leaders’. Except in the game of elections, at the end the crowd votes. I am not asking us to abandon training, team strategy and overall excellence. I’m asking us to understand that our completely myopic focus on winning without attention to how we play has led us to lose the value of the sport. #LongPostAlert: A few years ago I had the opportunity to work with a brand that hosts networking events during Super Bowl weekend for current, former and aspiring professional athletes. Here's the thing, I'm not a sports fan. Don't ask me about stats, I have no team, I go to the game for the snacks and the culturally-acceptable yelling...🤷🏾♀️ But athletes fascinate me. I'm extremely interested in their mindsets, their discipline to prepare to win and when they do things off the field I'm even more curious. It helps that I can usually find an angle that aligns with my areas of focus and turn it into content for my brands. 💡 For example, I had an opportunity to interview NFL Hall of Famer Will Shields in 2020 and he talked about his own journey of evolving through his transition(s) since retiring. That chat with him became a conversation with my Confidence Coaching audience about the importance of being in community as you're saying yes to new chapters. So when I saw a snippet of this interview with Warren Sapp talking about his goal to be on Coach Prime's staff, what jumped out to me was the emotion that rose up in him as he talked about being with the players who saw his experience and expertise as valuable. He said they "shook his pockets for the keys to the vault", they were determined to get the gems they know he has so they can be better players. But why am I sharing this?? How is this relevant to you and your online brand-owning life? Because you too have keys to the vault that your people want to open. You too are carrying experience, expertise, wisdom that can become the foundation for somebody's next. And I know we marketers tend to focus on the transaction, but when you're passionate about your thing, and the gravity of how your thing can transform somebody's life hits you, the emotional payoff will ALSO be significant. Have you ever noticed that baseball All-Star games and national political conventions are more-or-less the same thing?  They happen in the dead of summer.  They’re not really competitions but exhibitions.  They celebrate the “stars” of the league.  The second-string players often steal the show.  And, if the producers aren’t careful, they’re interminable. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, this is because both ceremonies function as the same type of public discourse (epideictic).  Both create messages of praise and blame that press values.  In sports, we praise those who succeed, criticize those who fail (or fail to try).  In politics, we praise our presidential candidate, whose election will bring world peace, harmony, blooming flowers, budding trees and personal wealth and success beyond our wildest dreams.  Blame is saved for their presidential candidate whose very existence is an existential threat to democracy, motherhood, apple pie, baseball, Ford trucks, Taylor Swift, all forms of decency and the global dominance of Greenwich Mean Time. Of course, our candidate cannot possibly be as good as we portray nor the opponent so bad.  But that is the game. We play as if the Democratic and Republican National Conventions are about policy.  But that’s eyewash.  By and large, we know the policies. Conventions are about making our candidate seem safe, heroic, decent and charitable and the opposing candidate a cad (if not an out-and-out criminal).  They are about creating a sense of inevitability, the feeling that our candidate is the President in truth if not yet in practice. This may not seem healthy.  But there is something to be said for a President who understands that the role is more about role model than about coercive power. Orson Welles told of talking with Franklin Roosevelt about the infamous “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast, a 1938 radio production in which Welles and company traumatized a good portion of the country by staging a fake Martian attack on the United States. Welles claimed that, during their conversation, FDR leaned over conspiratorially and said, “That’s how it works.  Your job is to stir them up.  My job is to calm them down.” There is much wisdom in that.  As many policies as he put in place, FDR’s greatness owed as much to his fireside chats as to anything, those calming moments when the President of the United States, in the face of global depression and global war, reassured the American public that it was all going to be okay. We could use a President like that today.  In a world in which we are at each other’s throats, we could use a President who leans into the microphone and reassures us that the sun will rise tomorrow, that the birds will chirp, that our lives will still be there, even if he was not our choice for President.
