Nowell Phelps’ Post

I’m super excited that after two years of hard work, the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration’s latest paper (and my first first-author paper, together with Rosie S. and Bin Zhou) has been published in The Lancet! https://lnkd.in/eqQTFDbV We analysed 3663 population-representative studies from 197 countries, finding a near-universal increase in obesity from 1990 to 2022 - more than one billion children, adolescents and adults are now affected – and a persistent burden of underweight in some regions. Policies to halt and reverse the obesity epidemic while addressing the remaining burden of underweight are sorely needed, especially those ensuring equitable access to nutritious foods. It's great to see the paper getting some recognition already, hopefully providing some encouragement for decision-makers to act on our results: In the FT: https://lnkd.in/etde5726 In the Economist: https://lnkd.in/eZPxrXSB And in the Guardian: https://lnkd.in/edG_qUp7 WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said “This new study highlights the importance of preventing and managing obesity from early life to adulthood, through diet, physical activity, and adequate care, as needed. Getting back on track to meet the global targets for curbing obesity will take the work of governments and communities… importantly, it requires the cooperation of the private sector, which must be accountable for the health impacts of their products.” Massive thanks to all >1500 co-authors for their contributions, and to the rest of the amazing NCD-RisC core team: Rachel Heap Archie Rayner Victor Lhoste James Bennett Ana Barradas Pires Gretchen Stevens Lakshya Jain Anu Mishra Rodrigo M. Carrillo Larco, MD, PhD and Majid Ezzati
