Microsoft released a new paper discussing Phi-3, their latest small language model, today and I think many people are sleeping on the opportunities that are about to open up with locally run, generalist models. A small model, closer to the user, with the benefit of context from ALL of their data across many services, is going to outperform specialist models and large (cloud hosted) generalist models in so many use cases. There are glimpses of it in the research and leaks from Apple - MM1 is model that can read and navigate through apps so you don't have to. There are never-ending rumors of a local language model to make future-Siri lower-latency and smarter. Google is shipping micro and mini Gemini on devices and giving developers the tools to build LoRAs to shape their behaviors. It will come for desktops too, with Microsoft pushing chip manufacturers for AI accelerators in all next-generation hardware. The cloud isn't going anywhere, but things suddenly look much brighter for local-first software.

As an Apple fan accustomed to seamless integration and innovation, I find Microsoft’s launch of the Maia 100 and Azure Cobalt CPU particularly intriguing. Microsoft’s foray into custom silicon parallels Apple’s own path, suggesting a significant shift in how tech giants are approaching hardware and software synergy . The collaboration with OpenAI on the Maia 100 accelerator is a noteworthy step. It reminds me of Apple’s strategy of forging strong partnerships to enhance their ecosystem. This move by Microsoft could set new standards in AI and cloud computing. While I admire Apple’s commitment to user experience and design, Microsoft’s focus on server efficiency and sustainable technology presents a different yet equally important innovation angle . I’m curious to see how this development by Microsoft will influence the competitive landscape and push the boundaries of what’s possible in technology. #TechInnovation #MicrosoftAzure #Apple #AI #CloudComputing https://lnkd.in/eYAg6Vr4

Here we go: Microsoft and some initial thoughts. Another very strong performance from Microsoft. With expectations so high, it is hardly surprising to see some pressure on the immediate release as there has been a bit of a melt up for the Super Six. Some tailwinds for $MSFT include the deep integration with #OpenAI and the early commercialization of its products, which are beginning to be reflected in the company's numbers. Furthermore, in Q3 2% of Azure revenue was AI related. That will be up this quarter. The overall Axude growth was very good as well at 30%. Cloud is accelerating again. The #AIPC wave will be material and will play a role in big growth for Windows and Personal Computing in the 2H. The company has such a diverse portfolio and wide hooks into consumer and enterprise--with its AI bets paying off early there is a lot to like in this--although we have to wait to see what guidance says which will shape sentiment for not only Microsoft but all of tech. #Microsoft

Throughout my travels closing out our Q2 and 2023, I have marveled at waking up each day with what seems like a flurry of non-stop AI-related announcements. Writing from SE Asia, I am still reflecting on Ignite. Just two weeks ago was Microsoft's Ignite 2023, where over 100 announcements were made. It can be overwhelming at times, so here is my punch list of top announcements from the event: Microsoft announced new AI chips, Copilot Studio, Azure Models as a Service, and AI capabilities for Windows 365. Microsoft partnered with NVIDIA and Databricks to empower AI developers and customers. Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 improved productivity and creativity for users. It looks like in the last few years, Microsoft has been getting its act together, following its disastrous shortsightedness in judging the capabilities of mobile devices. With over a billion Windows OS installations, Google should never be in a second place in mobile space; it should have been Microsoft. Anyway, with the advent of cloud and now AI, Microsoft's aggressive approach to embracing the future is mesmerizing. Today, nobody has better integration of AI than Microsoft, and everyone knows that whoever first integrates AI end-to-end in their ecosystem gets a bigger slice of the pie. #Microsoft #AI #cloudcomputing #satyanadella

Anissa G. Chip is ONLY one of the three elements that can make AI work: 1. high computational capability (fast GPUs), 2. electricity (battery/power supply) 3. metadata. The importance of fast chips has been taken for granted. Without electricity, the machine won't work. Also, battery accounts for 40% of the total cost of an electric machine, e.g., electric car. For in-house AI applications, the electricity bills of a C-level friend of ours has doubled because of using AI.💰🤑💸 Metadata is an enabler. It's a digital content, NOT a technology. It's like a treasure map, curated by human for treasure hunting. Without metadata, NO data can be found/retrieved, even by the most advanced technologies, like AI, quantum computers, etc. https://lnkd.in/g-aJFnXR We are using our expertise/IP, a copyrighted multilingual metadata, to do what AI can't do in data analytics NOW. We continue to leverage the advancements in AI to power our advertising solutions. The impact is transformational and will continue to improve, the more we test and learn. Even more exciting are the innovations in cloud where enterprise, data and advertising will intersect. Today's announcements at Cloud Next '24 will shed even more light into exciting work streams like Gemini for Google Cloud which provides AI assistance to help users work and code more efficiently, manage their applications, gain deeper data insights, identify and resolve security threats, and more. Another amazing product is Imagen which delivers advanced generative media capabilities. Today’s preview of text-to-live image capabilities makes Imagen even more powerful for enterprise workloads. This allows marketing and creative teams to generate animated images such as GIFs, and more, from a text prompt. The application of this for how we can efficiently build and rethink the way we do creative is very exciting and will hopefully allow for clients and agencies to re purpose those saved resources into other critical business areas. There is so much going on in our space and although it can be confusing...the bottom line is having the right foundation and infrastructure will be pivotal to every business, government and user for AI transformation for the present and future. #google #googlecloud #advertising #ai https://lnkd.in/ggXaW84a
