In 2020, Singapore made history by approving the sale of lab-grown meat, attracting significant interest from companies and investors. However, several years later, the industry is facing a slowdown. Speaking to Miro Lu from CGTN, Director of #NTUsg's Food Science and Technology Programme Prof William Chen explained that the current technology is not yet capable of scaling up effectively. He added that many food tech start-ups are discovering challenges with cell proliferation, working independently without collaboration and using investor funds primarily for upstream research rather than product development, which has hindered their ability to deliver on their promises.
