I saw today that Mac sales fell 27% in the last fiscal year. That’s wild. Apple is playing catch-up right now, especially in AI where it’s way behind Alphabet and Microsoft. But, it does look like some moves are being made. Apple are now preparing to overhaul their entire Mac line with a new family of in-house processors designed to highlight artificial intelligence. These M4 processors are pretty powerful. They’re expected to support as much as a half-terabyte of memory. This fits considering Apple’s plan is to build AI functionality into their devices, natively. Will be interesting to see how Apple’s June dev conference pan’s out - Apple need’s to make big strides here - super excited to see what’s in store.

The same can be said of Tesla. Apple has a great run with the iPhone and the Apple App store. iPads, iWatch etc are derived from the iPhone and Apple App store ecosystem. In terms of tech, Samsung has caught up on the phone side and leverages on the Google Play Store; and Chinese handphone makers have caught up on the app side and the tech side in China, Apple's key market outside of the US. Around 2017. So Apple leveraged on its branding as a premium phone (with almost the best specs) - that I think will slowly run its course too "Its revenue expansion is stagnating, and the stock is underperforming the Nasdaq 100 by about 16 percentage points, the most to start a year since 2013. The company still generates massive revenues, but whether that can keep increasing at the pace investors have come to expect is an open question. Here's the thing: Tim Cook's Apple is great at monetizing but not so good at creating new business lines. Steve Job's Apple was better at new products, not so good at maximising. So let's just say Tim Cook's approach has squeezed the cash cows .... as far as the milk production goes, to the limit. "“If you’re a long-term investor that really likes solid, stable growth, that’s very annuity like, with growing margins, improving profitability and a business that generates significant amounts of cash and still has lots of innovation runway, we think Apple is a great place to be,” said Kevin Walkush, portfolio manager at Jensen Investment Management." Look, this is not a bad place to be. Mircosoft for many years was a value stock - and then it moved into cloud, and then got the jump into OpenAI - its stock is hot. (Reminder: Stock performance in the short term is not necc correlated to actual business performance) "For the past couple of years, Apple has commanded a premium valuation on par with Microsoft’s. Two years ago, when tech stocks got hit hard, the shares held up far better than those of its peers." Not anymore. MS is more cool than Apple. Shit, Toyota is gaining on Tesla in the cool stock to own. Can Apple deliver on AI? Probably not. Apple has no special insight into AI and how it can apply to its users; because that is too narrow a use case. the Apple Car was supposed to also complement the AI push but I sense that they are just as confused as to the actual goal or the vision. Otherwise it would have been on stage. Also this applies to Tesla.

And there’s perhaps no story more interesting in the world of technology giants than a changing of the guard: Microsoft has stolen the “most valuable” crown from Apple and things are getting interesting. The changeover is not an idle one. Microsoft’s tie-up with OpenAI and its rapid deployment of AI tools into its various software products has earned it favor with investors, who anticipate that it’s going to manage to extract revenue, growth, and profits from all the AI-related work. Apple seems to be the only level-headed contender in the AI arms race. Friday saw Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), NVIDIA (NVDA), and AMD plunge by 2.87%, 9.93%, 3.55%, and 2.44% respectively. Apple (AAPL) was +2.14%. They delayed the launch of Apple Intelligence (Mark Gurman's article linked in comments) to ensure stability and user experience over speed to market, unlike their rivals who rush to release products with subsequent updates to address issues. When the unveiling of Apple's generative AI features at WWDC was met with a lukewarm response from investors (who understandably expected something more groundbreaking), Apple stepped back in the shadows likely to refocus on its AI strategy to avoid the risk of overpromising and underdelivering (Hope King's article linked). This has been their strategy beyond AI too. They are often mocked for acting like their new features are revolutionary if they already exist on Android devices, but it does mean they consistently deliver polished and refined products, often at the expense of being first to market. This is a major determinant of their high brand value and customer loyalty. Right now, Apple seems to be the only one building a solid, strong foundation for actual long-term success.

With rumors swirling that Apple is in talks with Google about using its Gemini models to power AI features on the iPhone, some have taken this as a sign that Apple is lagging in the AI race.❓ "Why aren't they using their own models?" ❓ I don't share that perspective at all. Their approach makes sense for 3 key reasons 👉 1️⃣ Distribution - The hardest thing to change is customer behavior. Apple has 2B active devices today. They're not lagging in the AI race - they are the prize at the end of it. They control the distribution. This is where we tend to get confused - the model is not the product, the model will power the product. We seem to be quickly heading towards a world where the model layer commoditizes. Why spend time and effort in that part of the stack when you can flex between whichever model drives the best outcomes at the lowest cost with the compute infrastructure to support your user base? We’ve seen this story before. Google pays Apple ~$20B a year to be the default search engine on Safari. Apple is best positioned to collect GTM rent from whomever breaks through the LLM knife-fight, even as Apple itself experiments with crafting the customer features this technology can power. 2️⃣ Compute - I don’t think our compute-starved world can support net new GPU capacity at the scale that Apple would require quickly enough. Given the speed to market needed here, partnering with a player who can support their infrastructure needs is likely a key criteria.   3️⃣ Liability - There is risk in having your own LLM because you are on the hook to explain the model’s output, as Google knows only too well. A third party partnership allows Apple to go to market quickly without any of the liability that arises from it. I don't think this is a concession of defeat from Apple as many seem to think. I think this is a sign that Apple may well be on its way to 'break new ground' in Generative AI as Tim Cook signaled last month. Can't wait for WWDC.
