They include autism and ADHD, communication and learning differences and development motor coordination differences. Each individual unique profile is extremely variable and impacts both positively and negatively. It is always great to hear how people have positively overcome challenges. Why so few Black Cowboys in ads? —— With #Pharrell showcasing Western Wear in the latest #louisvuitton collection, all the buzz is about #blackcowboys. In an interview, Pharrell rightly brings attention to the historical fact that the original American Cowboys were people of color— Black Americans and Indigenous people. I have always felt as a #westernphotographer that I had a responsibility to honor this. In this #lifestylecommercial I directed for Boot Barn, from the beginning I knew I wanted to tell a meaningful story that showcased Black Cowboys in the dignified light they deserve. Black Cowboys are crucial to an accurate depiction of Western Lifestyle. It’s important that Western brands & advertisers understand their responsibility to include people of color. And not just when it's in vogue because Louis Vuitton did it. Because it's the right thing to do. Because life is better when we include all our friends. Tyler Perry's decision to leave Hollywood? Creative control: By leaving Hollywood, Perry gained complete creative control over his projects, allowing him to tell stories that reflected the experiences and perspectives of Black people without interference from industry gatekeepers. Inclusivity: Perry wanted to create a space where Black talent could thrive and feel represented. He saw an opportunity to build a community where Black writers, directors, and actors could work together and support each other. Atlanta's film-friendly environment: Atlanta offers a more business-friendly environment, with lower production costs, tax incentives, and a growing pool of talented local crew members. This allowed Perry to produce high-quality content without breaking the bank. Access to diverse storytelling: Atlanta's diverse population and rich cultural heritage provided Perry with access to unique stories and perspectives that might be harder to find in Los Angeles. As for why other Black entrepreneur executives in the film industry haven't followed suit, there are several reasons: Lack of access to resources: Starting a studio or production company requires significant resources, including funding, equipment,and infrastructure. Many Black entrepreneurs may not have access to these resources

Men need less judgement and more support. And the fact that the above statement needs to be followed with a justification is a sad reality of our times. In recent years, there seems to be a lot of hate and shame being directed at men in online spaces for the wounds suffered at the hands of a broken system. And whilst I am not saying that we forget the damage caused in the past, to hold all men responsible would appear to me to be an ineffective path to making a more beautiful future for us all. The term toxic masculinity has taken root in the public consciousness to the point that “toxic” was made word of the year by Oxford Languages in 2018. The issue is, we are so focused upon telling boys and men how they should not be, what they should not say and what they should not do, that we cripple them into giving up their own identity. In my experience from working with men over the years, compassion and inspiration are far better motivators for one’s personal realisation than judgement and shame. What if we were to give a sense of direction for these boys and men to aspire toward? What would it mean if we were to instead highlight examples of a healthy masculinity in this world? Men who are breaking the stigmas and presenting mature, emotionally-grounded leadership. Men who are empowering others to break out of conditioning and into authenticity. Maybe that kind of thing doesn’t sell as many headlines. But perhaps it’s a good place to start. Are you willing to support men in this journey?

Flags. Since encountering this one at an excellent performance this week flags have been on my mind alot. In part because of my response to being confronted by this prominent one (ambivalent). Flags invariably have a potent symbolism. But what exactly do they symbolise? And to whom? Perhaps pride in a sports team; part of our community or personal identity; a safe haven. Often a rallying point for a cause. They can be perceived in different ways. For many the rainbow 🌈 flag is benign. A symbol of hope, inclusion and solidarity. For others it provokes hostility, oppression and persecution. National flags have myriad meanings. They may represent power (whether current or historical); unity - perhaps after conflict; values or tenets of a political system. Allegiance to a national flag may be a joyful rite of passage to citizenship; or a coercive tool. Context is key. Understanding symbols and our response to them is a theme that comes up regularly in my coaching practice. What do flags mean to you? What are your cherished symbols?

So many men I’ve worked with (and I’ll include myself here!) received messages around emotions or feelings that said, emotions are - a form of weakness - a female trait and should be avoided - untrustworthy - have no value and should be ignored …on and on Yet, when I had a moment of significant burnout in my life…the biggest contributing factor to my burnout was not life’s circumstances but my inability to feel and process my emotions about and around life circumstances. Emotions are information. Valuable information. Understanding and allowing them made me a better leader, husband, father, and friend. It also helped me navigate challenges in my life that lead to deeper meaning, fulfillment, and insight. When I was ignoring my emotions, everything just showed up as anger. But I didn’t know why I was angry. This was causing problems in my relationships. I was losing motivation in all areas of life. Finding ways to numb because I didn’t have the skills to understand and navigate my internal world, feeling and emotions. I ultimately fell into burnout and it wasn’t pretty. I got the help I needed and emotions were one of the ways I came back to life.
