NYC Department of Parks & Recreation’s Post

Today, we mourn the loss of Dr. Ruth, a longtime New Yorker and friend of parks, who fought for Fort Tryon Park and the parks of northern Manhattan with the same fire and humor that she displayed in life.

  • Dr. Ruth Westheimer sits on a bench in Fort Tryon Park. She appears to be sharing a joke with New York City Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue.

She so loved Ft. Tryon Park. I took walks with her, and in later days took her there in her wheelchair. She loved the heather garden, the promenade, "Freddie's bench" the tulips and she was also so excited to see so many people enjoying and benefitting from Jacob Javits playground. Thanks to all that the Parks Department does! (now if we could just get more help to eliminate the parties with loud amplification/speakers, that would be out of this world!!)

She was a trailblazer and a lovely person. I had the pleasure of meeting her some years ago.

No one like her and her Dr Ruth tulips will keep blooming at #FortTryonPark just like the Fort Tryon Park Trust she co-founded!

She was a champion of Upper Manhattan parks and she will be sorely missed by everyone, but especially the residents of Washington Heights and Inwood. 😢

I was so sad to hear of her passing. While I never met Dr. Ruth, she was truly an amazing person. Her memory is certainly a blessing.

I was not aware of this-I have even greater respect for her. Rest in peace, Dr. Ruth. What a force.
