Scotland’s visitor attractions enjoyed a surge in visits last year as many sites got back to pre-pandemic levels, according to new statistics. The annual Association of Leading Visitor Attractions members’ figures show that visits to Scotland’s most popular sites increased by 21% in 2023 compared with 2022, ahead of the UK average of 19%. Scotland’s top ten attractions alone drew 11.9m visitors, up from 9.8m in 2022. The country also had six of the 30 most-visited attractions in the UK, compared with five for the rest of the UK outside London

An interesting read. Note the dominance of London and SE in the lists of 'most visited'. The good news is that visits to attractions continued to grow in 2023 but the rate of increase has slowed to 11%, which means the sector was still seeing far fewer visitors than in 2019 – down 28%. Evidence that the attractions sector is still struggling to fully recover, in line with many other parts of the broader visitor sector. Cost of living is a key reason - which means visitors are being more cautious about their spending.  Also worth noting that 25% of attractions are still operating at below pre-covid staffing levels. Marketing Manchester is planning to set up a monthly barometer for visitor attractions across the city region to help monitor and benchmark performance. Let me know if you wish to participate.

My top 10 Common Mistakes Tourists Make and How to Avoid Them 2.      Not Booking Popular Attractions in Advance Major attractions, such as the Alhambra, often sell out quickly, especially during peak tourist seasons (spring, summer, and major holidays). It is recommended to book at least 3 months in advance to secure your desired date and time. For instance, a family of friends neglected to book their tickets in advance and missed out on visiting this iconic site. Only when they realised their mistake did they call me, seeking help, but even as a travel agent, I could not perform such miracles. It is essential to book tickets well in advance to secure your spot and avoid disappointment. To manage the masses, only 8,000 people are allowed per day and once that is capped, there is no way in. Exploring the intricately designed Nasrid Palaces and strolling through the Generalife Gardens left me in awe of the architectural mastery and centuries-old legacy of Moorish rule, so I would highly recommend you do not miss it. Tourist Attractions in England see rise in visitor numbers in 2023! The annual Visitor Attractions Survey reports an 11% annual increase in visits from 2022 to 2023, although admissions volume remained 28% lower than in 2019. ‘Museums / Art Galleries’ and ‘Places of Worship’ were the two categories to see biggest growth in visits, up 20% and 19% respectively from 2022 to 2023. Most regions saw admissions growth between 4-8% in 2023, but this was notably higher in London (26% increase). In 2023, the sector grew due to an increase in overseas visits to attractions (+80% on 2022) and an increase in school trips in 2023. Overall, sites reported a 2% decline in domestic visits. However, research from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions paints a better picture for the East of England, it being the only region or country in the British Isles that saw an increase in customers to visitor attractions in the period from 2019-2023 and the region in England that saw the biggest increase in visitors from 2022-23, as highlighted in the graphic below.
