As the sun shimmered on the pool's surface, Oscar, a buoyant bear with boundless bravery, took his position atop the diving board. With a belly full of butterflies, he prepared for a plunge that would leave jaws dropping and paws applauding! If the board is of the given dimensions and made of fiberglass, how high would Oscar (400 kg) need to jump to plastically deform the diving board? First, assuming width = 50 mm, length = 200 mm, and thickness = 10 mm, we calculate cross-sectional moment of inertia of the diving board to be: I = (bh^3)/12 I = (0.050 * (0.01)^3)/12 = 5 * 10^-8 The diving board material is fiberglass, which has a flexural strength (strength in bending) of approximately 200 megapascals (this number varies widely given fiberglass is a composite material). When the bear jumps up and lands on the diving board, the board will impart an opposing force equal to the weight of the bear + enough force to cancel the bear’s momentum. The force to cancel the bear’s momentum is the impulse force and can be found by dividing the desired change in momentum by the time over which the impulse is imparted. FdivingBoard = Fbear + Fimpulse Fbear = m * g Fimpulse = ΔP / Δt FdivingBoard = m * g + ΔP/ Δt If we assume the time interval delta t to be 0.1 seconds and complete momentum transfer to the board: F = m * g + (m * Vf)/Δt = m(g + Vf)/0.1 To find Vf we can apply basic kinematics or energy theory: mgh = mVf^2/2 Vf = √(2g * h) By simplifying the force to a point load (which we have found in terms of m, g, and h) and assuming that bending is the dominant stress, this problem can be abstracted to a fixed-end cantilever beam problem (our favorite)! The only difference is that instead of using the deflection formula, want to use the flexural strength and bending stress formula to back-calculate h. I recently completed a project for CREWTEK that involved interviewing employers in the construction market about what they are looking for when hiring. I talked to GCs, Crane Rental Companies, Industrial Contractors, and Steel Erectors. Every person I spoke to is looking to hire people with less than three years of experience and the primary skill set desired is work ethic! They just want people to show up on time, and have a desire to work hard and learn. They’ll teach you the rest. However, when I talk to parents who are trying to help their kids figure out a career path, they want something more tangible than that. I get it. I’m a parent of young adults too! What skills, certifications, internships should someone starting out have to help them on their way? Here’s my Top 5 suggestions: 1. Driver’s License (The regular kind… There is a trend for Gen Z to delay getting their license and it’s a barrier to getting hired.) 2. CDL, Class A (After getting your regular driver’s license, of course!) 3. Signal Person/Equipment Flagging Training 4. Basic Rigger Training and Certification (Rigging is used in nearly every facet of construction, even if you never work as a “rigger” you will do rigging!) 5. Today, I successfully replaced the faulty #brake of a trolley electric motor in an RTG. Tackled the challenge with my team member, Caleb Benson, ensuring safety and efficiency in every detail. The trolley motor brakes on a Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) are responsible for stopping, slowing down, and controlling the movement of the trolley. They contribute to the precision required during container handling operations. They enable the operator to bring the trolley to a halt or control its speed, preventing accidents, collisions, and ensuring the safety of personnel and cargo. In emergency situations, reliable trolley motor brakes are essential for prompt emergency stops to prevent accidents or mitigate potential hazards. A faulty trolley motor brake in an RTG not only compromises safety but also has cascading effects on control, load handling, equipment durability, and operational efficiency. I'm happy to share my Internship journey in OXIER INDIA Private Ltd. I worked as an Electrical Engineer in the designation of maintenance of DC Generators. During the course of the internship, I have a great amount of responsibility, a sincere and genuine willingness to learn, and a zeal to take on new assignments and challenges. In particular, coordination skills and communication skills are excellent and attention to detail is impressive................................ ......................................................................,............... #Regular Inspection: Conduct routine visual inspections to check for signs of wear, corrosion, loose connections, and overheating. This can help identify potential issues early. #Cleaning: Keep the generator clean and free from dust, dirt, and debris, as these can cause insulation breakdown and overheating. Regularly clean the commutator and brushes. #Lubrication: Ensure proper lubrication of bearings and moving parts to reduce friction and prevent premature wear. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for lubricants and maintenance schedules. #Brush #Inspection and #Replacement: Monitor the condition of carbon brushes regularly. Replace brushes when they wear down to a certain level to maintain proper contact with the commutator. #Commutator Maintenance: Check the commutator for wear, flat spots, and signs of damage. If necessary, resurface or replace it to maintain good electrical contact. #Field Windings #Inspection: Inspect the field windings for signs of damage or overheating. Rewind or repair them as needed to maintain their integrity. #Armature #Winding Inspection: Periodically inspect the armature winding for loose connections, insulation breakdown, or signs of overheating. I completed 1st week of my Internship at Banaras Locomotive Work (BLW), in Loco Test Shop (not part of my alloted workshop). All team members, staff, and workers were quite supportive and helpful. About Loco Test Shop:- This shop testing procedure is conducted for Locomotive before being dispatched to the customers. Testing of locomotive involves mechanical & electrical equipment load test, air brake test, electrical track test, Shower Test, RRT (Rode Run Test), etc. Air Brake Test : Nowadays locomotive braking systems are pneumatic in nature i.e., compressed air is used for obtaining brake application. In the Air Brake system compressed air is used for opening the brake system. The locomotive compressor charges the feed pipe and the brake pipes throughout the length of the train. The feed pipe is connected to the auxiliary reservoir and the brake pipe is connected to the brake cylinder through the distributor valve Pantograph balancing test : A mechanical test called the pantograph balancing test is used to make sure that the pantograph mechanism on locomotives or electricity trains is aligned and balanced properly. These exams are essential for preserving trustworthy communication. During the balancing test, the pantograph is subjected to different positions and loads to evaluate its performance and make any necessary modifications between the pantograph and overhead wire, optimizing power collection, and minimizing wear and tear. Shower Test:- The tightness of the locomotive in terms of waterproofing is an important factor that has a specific impact on the performance of the locomotive in several conditions such as during the rainy season. A shower test typically refers to a test conducted on a locomotive to check its water tightness and assess any potential leaks. ⭕Internship Story 03: Fumes All Around Us❗ 🏭 Particularly, it was the first week of our internship at the Lotte facility when fumes in small amounts leaked through the Oxidation Chamber and spread throughout the facility. 🚨 Swiftly responding to the situation, the management decided to put the plant on a short shutdown to rectify the fume leakage. 📝 Upon observation, the mechanical seal on the agitator's transmission shaft was found damaged. To prevent seal failure from occurring again, a brief study was carried out to detect the underlying cause of the problem. ⚙️ All suspicions turned to the pilot shaft; perhaps the shaft had deformed and induced "play" in it. 🔊 Since seals are sensitive to vibrations, even small vibrations can disturb tight clearances and cause their faces to come in contact, giving rise to face failure. 🔩 Upon confirmation of play in the pilot shaft, the shaft was replaced with a spare one. 📦 The old shaft was repaired, and after checking the runout, it was stocked in inventory for emergency situations. Hello #connections! Thriving in a fast-paced environment, I recently concluded my 6 months internship and it was an immersive journey into the world of oil and gas safety and sustainability. This experience has been incredibly rewarding, exceeding my expectations in every way especially in aspects of #safety, #health, and #environmental practices. I'm truly grateful for this incredible opportunity and the positive impact it had on my career trajectory. Throughout my 6 months internship here, I have been exposed to lots of work, such as participating in Human Factor Engineering (HFE) Site Verification, Workplace Assignment (WPA) on blasting and painting, QHSE Appreciation Day, Scaffolding Audit, MPM Site Visits, and etcetra. Talking about Workplace Assignments (WPA), I have been assigned to Yard in Johor for 2 weeks. I have been given the opportunity to watch and learn about every activity at the Central Processing Platform (CPP). For 2 weeks, I have been following the HSE Officer to visit the site from Cellar Deck to Cooler Deck. As I ascended, each level unveiled a new facet of the operation's intricate ballet. The journey through the CPP was more than just a technical exploration, the experience left me inspired and eager to contribute my skills and knowledge to the ever-evolving world of oil and gas. Aside from that, since I work on my WPA for blasting and painting, I got the opportunity to visit how they manage their schedule waste for blasting and painting, as well as on how to dispose of and keep the waste. Based on my WPA, I have learned what the hazards are for each job step, how to calculate the risk rating, and control measures for blasting and painting activities. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals during my WPA. Through this WPA, I've discovered that blasting and painting are not just technical processes but an art form requiring precision, creativity, and a deep understanding of materials and their interactions. This experience has broadened my perspective and reminded me that learning never truly ends. While I've learned a lot in the first half, I'm still a sponge, eager to soak up as much knowledge and experience as possible in the next six months. I'm excited to tackle new tasks, take on more responsibility, and continue to grow as a professional in the next 6 months. #internshipjourney #occupationalsafetyandhealth #environmentalhealth #handsonexperience
