Games can be frustrating until you figure out the rules and an approach that works for you to advance. Careers are a game too. And here's how you can apply Lakshman Somasundaram's method of elimination to your career game:
There are literally thousands of jobs and possible career paths you can take as a next step.
BUT -> Only one job or promotion you can take as your next move.
Trying to pursue multiple jobs and career paths will confuse and overwhelm you. A strategy of elimination will make it easier to identify the easiest path forward.
This is how it could look:
The color regions in Queens = industries you've had experience with
Rows and columns = verticals you've had experience in (AI, SaaS, mobile, etc)
Borders around the Queen = the stage of company where you've excelled
When you approach identifying your target jobs with FLIVS™, you can:
F: Pick the right Function, and eliminate the rest
L: Pick the right Level, and eliminate the rest
I: Pick the right Industry, and eliminate the rest
V: Pick the right Verticals, and ignore the rest
S: Pick the right Stage of company, and eliminate the rest
Most people say:
I can be a Product Manager who can manage a team or be an IC in any Industry, with any Vertical in both startups and Enterprise companies.
-> This makes too many options available to pursue, which will confuse and overwhelm you.
-> Just like trying to play Queens by randomly guessing across all rows, columns, borders and colors.
But if instead you said:
I choose to focus my next role in something I have tons of experience in - like being a senior Individual Contributor in Product working on mobile apps and AI in the gaming industry for startups and growth companies.
-> Now, if there's a job open for a PM in Roblox or Zynga, guess which of the two people above they'll want to talk to, even if both have equally relevant experience?
