I presented to the Pahang State Secretary, along with other state agencies, showcasing the Smart City accreditation criteria and highlighting success stories related to key items on the checklist. These success stories, drawn from successful implementations by TM ONE, demonstrated how meeting these criteria can significantly enhance urban management, improve public services, and promote sustainable development. By sharing these TM ONE success stories, we provided valuable insights into practical implementations and the benefits achieved.

We continued our capacity development activities with the SUMP meeting on “Interdepartmental Working Group” on February 7th. The meeting, which was held to share the current status of the SMART Ankara project, to discuss the importance of the SUMP project for future studies in Ankara, to contribute to the stage of creating scenarios designed around various policies and approaches and measures that can ensure the realisation of these scenarios, was held with the participation of Murat Alican ERSEVER, Deputy Head of Transport Technologies Department of EGO General Directorate, Göktuğ KARA, Transport Policy and Climate Change Team Coordinator representing the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye, and valuable representatives of the relevant units of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality and EGO General Directorate. During the meeting, the relationship of SMART Ankara with other strategic plans (Green City Action Plan, Bicycle Master Plan, Urban Transformation Plans, planning of recreation areas, etc.); determining the main points of the project roadmap where stakeholder and citizen participation is most important, the impact of land use plan visions on SMART Ankara; discussing road, pavement and signalling projects, defining guiding urban plan decisions to increase comfort for active mobility; positioning for natural disasters and the role of resilience; institutional partnerships to increase the effectiveness of the project and how to incorporate transportation-related comments and requests from urban stakeholders was discussed. Guaranteeing better representation for all stakeholders – including civil society – in City Port decision-making bodies. 2. Committing to continuous, long-term consultation across the City Port region. 3. Guaranteeing transparent management of City Port regions and adopting open information systems. 4. Developing collaborative approaches, drawing on scientific and technologic knowledge from the scientific community and civil society to support decision making. 5. Adopting a land management policy that strikes a balance between urban uses and the active port, especially on the waterfront. The #Agenda2030ByAivp includes 10 goals indicating the main challenges for sustainable port cities, and 46 measures for action. 🌅 People living in informal settlements invest heavily in incremental home improvements but often face high costs and limited access to durable, sustainable materials. With increased threats from extreme weather, understanding the supply chain for these materials is crucial for better outcomes. For the last few months the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) has been working with SDI. Today we celebrate the World Town Planning Day, catalyzing planning actions, events and learning in more than 30 countries worldwide since 1949. The 74th anniversary recognizes the necessity of learning from the planning cultures and experiences of our peers, celebrating the diversity of pathways towards #sustainabledevelopment and our differences – between the Global South and Global North, East and West, and so on. “Learn Globally, Apply Locally” goes back to Geddessian roots a century ago and to the coinage of the term nearly 50 years ago, but it’s still as relevant as ever. Within the bandwidth of a global path towards a future that leaves most of us highly concerned, each place has its own trajectory and culture. The ISOCARP - International Society of City and Regional Planners #UEF5+#WPC59 Congress in #Toronto last month, but also the ISOCARP Planning Workshop in #Qatar together with Prof. Ali A. Alraouf and President Pietro Elisei earlier highlighted just how much two-way learning can stem from sitting together and trying to solve common wicked problems with our own different approaches and instruments. Planning needs more effort put into the first principle approach, and less focus on traditional normative knee-jerk reactions or misfitting imports. Respect for each other’s’ knowledge and local rooting of methodologies and technologies is exactly that kind of sense-making process. Tomorrow, I am flying out to Birmingham UK to attend the Royal Town Planning Institute National Planning Conference 2023 and the panel on International Planning: a timely discussion on the priorities of planning across the globe, and a reflection on the different experiences and lessons learned along the way. Looking forward!
