Extremely proud to post some extracts from the the following article that features in the New Civil Engineer https://lnkd.in/eXEFcR6K "New tech uses cosmic rays to detail structural integrity of infrastructure" By Thomas Johnson .....Tech company GScan has developed scanning technology using naturally occurring cosmic rays to detail the structural integrity and chemical composition of infrastructure assets. GScan uses naturally occurring cosmic rays, known as muons, to reveal items that may be hidden within tens of metres of a structure. It is currently being trialled on the UK’s highways network. Around 10,000 muons/m2 pass harmlessly through individuals, buildings and structures every minute, changing direction and speed based on the chemical composition of the objects they encounter. GScan’s scanners detect changes to the flow of muons, known as muon flux, and then uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse this information, creating 3D models of the structure accurate to 10mm. It’s the only technology capable of scanning concrete deeper than 1m, according to GScan. Achieving accuracies 30 times that of current industry standards, GScan believes it has set a new benchmark for non-invasive imaging for complex legacy structures. The muon flux scanning was recently used to detail the internal structures of two Soviet-era nuclear submarine reactors in Paldiski, Estonia. The Estonian Ministry of Environment required detailed plans of the reactors' internal structure and traditional imaging techniques such as ultrasound and ground penetrating radar (GPR) could not be used as they are unable to scan steel or penetrate concrete beyond 1m. Muon flux scanning provided the solution. GScan stated its current focus for the scanning technology is on infrastructure assessment for assets like bridges, dams and tunnels. The company is about to conclude its maiden project with National Highways, scanning for steel components in a post-tensioned concrete bridge. GScan co-founder Andi Hektor : “Muon flux scanning is now proven to offer a solution for mapping undocumented nuclear sites safely and accurately. “The technology offers unparalleled accuracy, doesn’t require operators to spend long periods on site exposed to radiation, and can provide detailed information on both the structure and materials it contains. In short, muon flux scanning will be invaluable in the safe decommissioning and ongoing management of nuclear waste and sites going forward.” Estonian Ministry of Climate deputy secretary general Antti Tooming said: “It is of paramount importance for Estonia that the radioactive waste, inherited from the Soviet era, can be safely stored for centuries to come. “This requires thorough preliminary work. Thanks to GScan, we have been able to investigate the real status of the former nuclear reactors in Paldiski using the most modern technology.”

Why consider using Seismic Restraints into your Project ⁉ Earthquakes pose a significant threat to buildings, particularly concerning the damage they can inflict on mechanical and electrical systems. Inadequately restrained equipment can suffer extensive damage during seismic events. This video addresses these concerns by presenting restraint systems designed to limit equipment movement during earthquakes to mitigate risks and minimize long-term costs associated with seismic damage. #knowmore at Kinetics Middle East LLC [email protected] / [email protected] https://lnkd.in/dBcydqmw Come and visit our Website and YouTube channel to get to know of our products and services! Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) breakthrough refers to the moment when a TBM completes its tunnelling task by breaking through the final section of the tunnel wall. This milestone signifies the successful completion of the primary tunnelling phase, indicating that the excavation process has been efficiently managed and potential geological challenges have been navigated. However, this is not the end of the project, as the mechanical and electrical phases usually begin after this stage.
