Webb Detects Most Distant Black Hole Merger to Date An international team of astronomers has used the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope to find evidence for an ongoing merger of two galaxies and their massive black holes when the Universe was only 740 million years old. This marks the most distant detection of a black hole merger and the first time researchers have detected this phenomenon so early in the Universe. They're black holes, but they're some of the brightest objects in the universe—and thanks to NYU astronomers, we now know the locations of about 1.3 million of them. NYU's David Hogg and colleagues have completed the largest map of the universe's known quasars, which are powered by supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies and can be hundreds of times brighter than an entire galaxy. As the black hole’s gravitational pull spins up nearby gas, the process generates an extremely bright disk, and sometimes jets of light, that telescopes can observe. The scientists built the new map, which charts the largest-ever volume of the universe, using data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia space telescope. The furthest quasar in it was shining when the universe was only 1.5 million years old. Image: A quasar seen at the center of a faraway galaxy in an artistic concept by @NASA. LabXchange and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration take us on an astronomical journey. The newest LabXchange cluster, “Exploring the Universe with James Webb,” delves into the captivating evolution of stars and galaxies, and the quest for extraterrestrial life. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the most advanced infrared space telescope created to date, allowing us to explore the evolution of our universe like no other telescope. Comprised of over 100 interactive digital resources from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Space Telescope Science Institute, Futurum Careers, The Scientista Foundation, and others, the cluster explores space telescopes and how JWST will launch and revolutionize future space exploration. Summary: • A recent discovery from data collected by NASA’s retired Kepler space telescope revealed a system of 7 “scorching” planets orbiting a distant star larger and hotter than the sun. • These planets, larger than Earth, range from rocky with thin atmospheres to those with thick atmospheres. This system is part of a new catalog of planet candidates discovered by the telescope, which contains almost 4,400 planets, including over 700 multi-planet systems. • The Kepler telescope, which ceased primary observations in 2013, helped demonstrate the abundance of planets in the galaxy, offering insights into their properties and their host systems. The comprehensive catalog will aid astronomers in further understanding these distant worlds. https://lnkd.in/ge52bs3G

The next payload of the #20PayloadsofPeregrine is the Peregrine Ion-Trap Mass Spectrometer for Lunar Surface Volatiles (PITMS). PITMS will characterize the lunar exosphere after descent and landing throughout the lunar day to understand the release and movement of volatiles, chemical elements and compounds with low boiling points and are thus easily turned to vapor. PITMS is a partnership between NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, The Open University (OU), and the European Space Agency (ESA). #PM1 #payload #7DaysofPeregrinePayloads #20PayloadsofPeregrine

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has captured near- and mid-infrared portraits of 19 face-on spiral galaxies, providing unprecedented views of stars, gas, and dust on scales previously unseen beyond our own galaxy. These intricate portraits, showcasing the telescope's advanced capabilities, are part of the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) program, inviting researchers to delve into the origins of these cosmic structures and deepen our understanding of star formation and spiral galaxy evolution. #infinitycosmos More Read > https://lnkd.in/giCbW--U

Galaxies, composed of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter, have intrigued humanity for centuries. Initially, we believed our Milky Way was the sole galaxy until Edwin Hubble, guided by Henrietta Swan Leavitt's work, identified the Andromeda Galaxy as a separate entity. Now, beyond the Milky Way, we've identified billions of galaxies, ranging from spirals like ours to elliptical and irregular forms. Discover how the James Webb Space Telescope is pushing the frontiers of astronomy to answer the mysteries of galactic composition and structure in this pathway. Using NASA's Webb telescope, researchers identified 3 galaxies that may be actively forming when the universe was only 400-600 million years old. These galaxies are surrounded by gas suspected to be almost purely hydrogen and helium, the earliest elements to exist. https://lnkd.in/enTnzwMs
