One of the answers is to join forces to go further together than we can alone. Napoleonic cultural heritage is the topic of this full day symposium that shall bring together cultural heritage institutions, museums and battlefields as sites of memory. I shall be chairing Session 1, with some of Europe’s top museums in conversation, guided by these two purposely chosen questions. The first - Who owns Napoleonic heritage, what memory or memories does it represent and for whom do museums conserve, present and interpret it? The second - Is there a European narrative in Napoleonic history and, if so, how can museums reconcile that with the national narrative they usually engage with? By asking such broad questions we shall hopefully be engaging in more deeper ways with the European dimension of cultural heritage and consensual curation as a tool to reach this goal.
