🌱 🌎 "Sharing the Planet" Theme with the central idea that plants are life-sustaining for us and other living things. 🌱 🌎 My PYP 3 students during the sorting out phase, the students and their parents actively participated in a planting activity. Recognizing the importance of including parents in the learning journey, the students created checklists before the 🪴 planting day 🪴 and closely followed and marked each step with their parents. To enhance their research skills, we provided the students with plant journals, where they observe their plants daily and record data. In addition to this, they did a sorting activity to differentiate between plant-based and non-plant-based food. In their writing, they practiced sequencing words to describe the step-by-step process of planting a seed. Also, the students applied their understanding of the change key concept by drawing the change that happens to the trees during the four seasons.

Children have an innate curiosity about the world around them. As parents and educators, we can foster this curiosity by teaching lessons on matters conservation from an early age. 👶 What do we mean by matter conservation? It's the understanding that matter can change form through physical and chemical changes, but the total amount of matter stays the same. For example, when ice melts into water, it's still the same amount of H2O molecules - just in a different form. Or when wood burns into ash, no wood material disappears, it just turns into different substances.⛄️🔥 Grasping this concept is foundational for later science learnings. And the earlier we expose children to these ideas in a hands-on, engaging way, the more naturally it will make sense to their developing minds. ✨ Some fun activities to try: baking transformations of ingredients into breads/cakes, building structures from clay then smashing them, exploring changes of state like ice to water. Get creative! The benefits of early exposure are immense: improved observational skills, data analysis, and most importantly - understanding at a young age that matter is never lost, just changed.
