𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? Two hedge fund Operations managers have said to me this week that hiring those with buyside experience is becoming increasingly more difficult. Shortage of options, long notice periods and a ‘buy side premium’ is making it expensive and time consuming to bring someone in. Which has forced their hand to look to the sell side for candidates, and they found good people -quickly. One team hired someone from a tier 1 bank. The other from a ‘mid-size’ Capital Markets bank. Both had the required product knowledge and skillset and settled in to their roles pretty seamlessly. Is it time for funds to start looking at more candidate with a sell side background?

One of the most interesting dynamics in private investment recruiting is when candidates say over and over, “I only want PE in New York.” Then 4 months later that candidate takes a hedge fund job in Miami. It’s ok to tell the recruiter you work with your real parameters related to positions and geography. Maybe that recruiter has a hedge fund position in New York or a better hedge fund position in Miami. They can’t help you if you don’t tell them what you would consider.

Over the course of my recent trip to London, I had several conversations about finding either the "right seat" or the "right firm" Pretty much every hedge fund is set up in a different way...yes there are similarities but not every multi-start works the same way etc. Perhaps a firm is set up in a way to protect its IP, perhaps another firm follows more of a single manager model. Perhaps another is more of a prop firm. Many firms have strict stop loss / risk parameters. None of this makes one firm "better" than another, but what it does mean is that not every firm is suitable for every person. The hedge funds with the largest AUM aren't necessarily 'the best' and smaller AUMs don't make other hedge funds worse. However, very large AUM might mean access to more research, better infrastructure support etc. Might also mean a more recognisable name on your resume too! The key to finding a new seat, where you can be most successful is working out what helps you perform to the best of your ability. Thanks for reading and hope it helps.
