Sundar Pichai is not going to be fired... Lately, I have been seeing so many posts stating that Google has failed in the AI game. The truth is, not yet. Google is doing something in the UK: • Google has started building an AI-powered data center that will cost $1B, in the UK. • The new facility is on a huge 33-acre site and will deliver cloud and AI number-crunching powers to the whole of the UK. • Google says the project will boost the growth of AI and "help ensure reliable digital services to Google Cloud customers and Google users in the UK". Microsoft is also Investing: • Microsoft announced a £2.5B investment in November, to build several data centers and AI hubs. • These investments will come as a relief to the UK. #google #datacenters #microsoft #uk

Google, through its Alphabet unit, is ramping up its investment in data centers, with a whopping $3 billion earmarked for a new campus in Indiana and expansion efforts in Virginia. This move comes amidst a surge in demand for cloud computing, driven by the growing applications of artificial intelligence. Not to be outdone, Amazon's cloud computing arm is also doubling down on its investments, committing $11 billion to new data centers in Indiana. Google's focus on Fort Wayne, Indiana, with a $2 billion investment, and a $1 billion expansion across three sites in Virginia, underscores its commitment to meeting this increasing demand. Additionally, Google is investing $75 million in the Google AI Opportunity Fund to further empower Americans with AI skills. These strategic moves position Google as a key player in the evolving landscape of technology and cloud computing. Hyperscale Giants Prepare for Jolly, Green Data Centers in New U.S. Geographies There's lots of news this week about major #hyperscale players building #datacenters in new places. Two key examples are Amazon Web Services (AWS) planning to invest $10 billion to build two new data center campuses on 1,700 acres of land in #Mississippi; and Meta / Facebook's latest pledge to build an $800 million hyperscale data center in Jeffersonville, #Indiana. It's an open question as to whether #cloud and #AI hyperscale overlords such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Meta Platforms' Facebook can build data centers wherever they want in the U.S., or just wherever they're most wanted. The two cloud giants were certainly, at least by and large, "wanted" as they unveiled new hyperscale development plans in two of the nation's more historically genial locales, known respectively for hospitality of the southern, and friendly Midwestern, varieties. Meanwhile, Meta's Jeffersonville announcement came just days after Google unveiled plans to build a cloud campus in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Read on: https://lnkd.in/eyVzZVaJ

Quarterly capex change for the hyperscalers: Amazon: $11.4B -> $17.6B = 54% Y/Y Growth Microsoft: $8.9B -> $13.9B = 55% Y/Y Growth Google: $6.9B -> $13.2B = 91% Y/Y Growth Meta: $6.2B -> $8.5B = 36% Y/Y Growth The narrative is becoming clear on AI capex: about 50% of the current capex is on land, leases, and construction. We’ve yet to see the real buildout of AI data centers, and we’re at the beginning of this trend. “Roughly half of FY '24's total capital expense, as well as half of Q4's expense, it's really on land and build and finance leases, and those things really will be monetized over 15 years and beyond.” - Amy Hood The rest of the capex is mostly going to GPUs and other AI infrastructure which will be driven by demand signals: “In the capital spend, there is land and there is data center build, but 60-plus percent is the kit, that only will be bought for inferencing and everything else if there is demand signal.” - Satya Google, at least hinted, at the potential of overinvesting: “The risk of under-investing is dramatically greater than the risk of over-investing for us.” - Sundar Pichai It’s clear that the hyperscalers are capacity-constrained for some AI workloads right now...the question is by how much and for how long. #aws #microsoft #meta #google #artificialintelligence #llms #chatgpt #generativeai #gpu #servers #datacenter #cloud #ai #technology #innovation #business credit: Eric

Typical layout of a large data center, via “The Datacenter as a Computer.” As companies race to create their own AI models, they are building enormous compute capacity to train and run them. Amazon plans on spending $150 billion on data centers over the next 15 years in anticipation of increased demand from AI. Meta plans on spending $37 billion on infrastructure and data centers, largely AI-related, in 2024 alone. Coreweave, a startup that provides cloud and computing services for AI companies, has raised billions of dollars in funding to build out its infrastructure and is building 28 data centers in 2024. The so-called “hyperscalers,” technology companies like Meta, Amazon, and Google with massive computing needs, have enough estimated data centers planned or under development to double their existing capacity. In cities around the country, data center construction is skyrocketing.
