What kind of projects does #Aid4Trade support? In 2022, economic infrastructure funding rose by 28%, reaching $27.9 billion, driven by transport, storage, and energy projects. ☀ Notably, renewable energy generation increased by 16% compared to 2020. Agriculture funding grew by 10%, while banking and financial services funding grew by 3%, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Since 2009, the OECD Development Centre has used the Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) to measure gender norms. Recent 2022 data shows a worrying trend towards more restrictive views: 🔹 35% believe women earning more than their husbands causes problems - up 6 percentage points (p.p.) since 2014 🔹 45% think men should have more job rights when jobs are scarce (up 4 p.p.) 🔹 56% say children suffer when mothers work for pay (up 5 p.p.) Aid for Trade increasingly focuses on inclusivity and sustainability. 82% of partner countries recognised gender as a priority, with gender-related #Aid4Trade commitments making up 46% of total bilateral commitments from 2021-22—a 6% rise from 2019-20. Climate-related commitments from Development Assistance Committee (DAC) donors reached $20 billion in 2021-22, comprising 67% of their bilateral commitments during that period.

In 2022, #AidforTrade financing to Asia increased by 22% to $18.2 billion, while disbursements to Africa experienced a slight 2.5% decrease at $17.5 billion. Europe is the third largest recipient of Aid for Trade, mainly due to support for Ukraine, which surged to $2.2 billion in 2022 (with 60 % of the total going to infrastructure projects).

The question of what it means to be a "real" man opens up discussions on masculinities—social norms about how men and women should behave, which vary across cultures and times. These norms can either support gender equality or uphold structures that restrict both men's and women's potential. Development communicators can effectively promote gender equality by using emerging data on masculinities, which includes measuring changes in these norms, documenting community stories, and highlighting successful interventions.
