On this day, we recognise and affirm the role of women’s organising in achieving the political freedom of Africa and advancing the social and economic status of women on the continent. This year’s theme, "Invest in Education: Securing the Future of Women and Girls in Africa," underscores the importance of education. Let's take a moment to: - Celebrate the progress made in advancing women’s rights to education in various countries. - Rally investments and support for enhancing infrastructure, teacher training, and foundational learning. - Foster knowledge sharing and exchange of best practices to improve education outcomes for women and girls in Africa. AFRICA DAY 2024 | As a group we are wholly committed to unlocking our continent’s potential, which is why education is at the heart of our social efforts. This is where our future lives. There are however mountains to climb, with these three issues being the tallest: 1: ACCESS: Simple access to education remains one of the continent's most pressing issues. While school attendance has increased, many rural areas still face imbalances, with children having to traverse great distances. 2: GENDER INEQUALITY: Girls and young women encounter significant cultural and safety barriers, hindering their access to education. (*UNESCO's research shows that 9 million sub-Saharan girls aged 6-11 may never attend school. 3: LOW-QUALITY SCHOOLING: Severe shortages of physical and learning resources, coupled with a lack of modern technology and adequately trained teachers, contribute to this issue. Language barriers and basic comprehension challenges further limit learning. The theme set by the African Union for 2024 has never been more relevant: "Educate an African fit for the 21st Century," with a focus on building resilient education systems that offer increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa. #AfricaDay #AfricanUnion #UNESCO #ThePowerOfAnd #SharedSustainability #SocialImpact

Today is Human Rights Day in South Africa🇿🇦 🇿🇦🇿🇦. We are living in a better country because of the previous generation’s impact, those who demanded change. When I was speaking on national television, eNCA a month ago, I couldn’t help but express what I think is the current generation’s fight. There are so many frustrated graduates who grabbed the opportunity of education with both hands but now are sitting at home wondering if the future is really bright. South Africa has a very high youth unemployment rate, one of the highest in world. We need to address this urgent socio economic issue not just for South African youth but for every young person in Africa. We need more dialogues and I would argue that they need to be followed by action steps that will result in sustainable development. Addressing Youth #Unemployment and #Gender #Inequality in #Africa According to the #International #Laour #Organisation, a significant challenge for African youth is the transition from school to work, with over 72 million young people not in employment, education, or training (NEET). This issue disproportionately affects young women, who make up two-thirds of this group. NEET rates have been rising in sub-Saharan Africa since 2015, with countries like Senegal seeing rates as high as 34.9%. Young women face greater barriers to entering the workforce, often due to household responsibilities. Higher education alone hasn't been a solution; despite more graduates, job creation hasn't kept pace. In Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, and Uganda, many young people, particularly women, struggle to find stable, satisfactory employment. Policy interventions are essential to support young men/women and create more job opportunities. While education and skills training are crucial, they must be coupled with macroeconomic and sectoral policies to ensure adequate job creation. To achieve Sustainable Development Goal 8 on decent work by 2030, we need comprehensive strategies addressing both the supply and demand sides of the labor market. Such as: 1. Networking between universities and industries 2. Intensive training and internship 3. Africa is in the unique position of being a relatively young continent, with a rapidly growing youth population. This brings with it much potential but also some challenges. The need for policy interventions to support young women in finding stable and satisfactory employment is crucial for the development of the African continent. It remains an issue of major concern that even highly educated young women were significantly more likely to be unemployed or outside the labour force than young men. Strategies and interventions to promote youth employment focus primarily on measures to improve education and skills training. Whilst these are essential, such an exclusive supply-side focus will not be sufficient. For serious progress to be achieved, these measures need to be complemented by appropriate demand-side macroeconomic and sectoral policies to ensure adequate job creation for young people. Tackling youth inactivity and gender inequalities is essential if countries are to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 8 on decent work for all by 2030.

Today is World Youth Skills Day 📖 Diaspora youth recommendations for the recognition of youth expertise, access to funding and inclusion in governance structures World Youth Skills Day highlights the importance of equipping young people with skills for the future and aims to foster dialogue among youth, policymakers, international organisations, and key stakeholders. Today calls upon key stakeholders to provide youth with the necessary skills and tools to thrive and actively participate in governance structures. 📌 Diaspora youth hold a special place in development and migration policy processes. Their comprehensive soft and hard skills, combined with their transnational connections, enable them to drive discourse and action in both their countries of residence and heritage. 📢 EU Global Diaspora Facility (EUDiF) EUDiF, in collaboration with 10 diaspora youth representatives, has developed a set of recommendations on integrating youth perspectives into migration policy processes and beyond. 📌 These recommendations encompass a range of topics, from crediting and remunerating young researchers to implementing flexible and participatory funding models.
