Today, the OECD - OCDE launches the Green Growth Policy Review of Egypt in Cairo. A rapidly growing emerging economy and a demographic heavyweight on the African continent, Egypt faces significant environmental challenges. High population growth, land-use change, pollution, and climate change are increasingly putting pressure on Egypt's natural environment, including its rich biodiversity. Despite this, since 2017, Egypt has achieved a relative decoupling of greenhouse gas emissions from economic growth. To continue this positive trend, further mainstreaming of climate action across sectors and progressively raising ambition is essential. As one of the world’s most water-stressed countries, Egypt can benefit from more robust water allocation and greater use of economic instruments to address scarcity and improve water quality. Aligned with Egypt’s Vision 2030, the government is committed to turning environmental challenges into opportunities. Steps are being taken towards more sustainable waste management and addressing air pollution, which remains a health concern. Moreover, Egypt holds significant potential to accelerate its clean energy transition. While there have been improvements in environmental information and data, enhancing public participation in environmental decision-making is crucial for continued progress. #Georgia: after a week of visiting ministries and other stakeholders in Tbilisi, presenting results of the climate change assessment FutureWater is doing with Asian Development Bank (ADB), I'm even more delighted by this country than I already was: on the crossroads of cultures in the centre of Caucasus but with a clear orientation towards Europe. This week the EU decided positively on its candidature status which was widely well received by the population. https://lnkd.in/dQbxE7k7 My objective this week was to get buy-in on the approach we are taking, present the results, and identify gaps and scope for expanding the work. The initial list of adaptation measures is presented, and priorities were discussed. The next step is to create an adaptation portfolio for an investment project that takes an integrated and catchment-based approach. Georgia is considered a water-rich country, but facing increasing water shortages and environmental challenges, with high potential to restore and preserve ecosystems, like wetlands, forests and grasslands, as well as to strengthen the country´s capacity to produce sustainable food and energy. Climate change will increasingly impact Africa due to many factors. These impacts are already being felt and will increase in magnitude if action is not taken to reduce global carbon emissions. The impacts include higher temperatures, drought, changing rainfall patterns, and increased climate variability.
