According to the latest World Investment Report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Ethiopia has become the leading destination for foreign direct #investment (FDI) in East Africa. In 2023, Ethiopia attracted $3.3 billion in FDI, surpassing #Kenya and #Uganda. The Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC), headed by Chief Commissioner Hanna Arayasellasie, report $3 billion in #FDI in the first ten months of the fiscal year 2023/24. #China significantly contributed, accounting for nearly half of the FDI projects in #Ethiopia. The success is attributed to Ethiopia's strategic use of public-private partnerships (PPP), with major #investments like the UAE's AMEA Power's $600 million in the Aysha #wind power project. The AfCFTA aims to achieve ambitious targets, including tariff linearization for 97 percent of trade across the continent. However, persistent challenges such as infrastructure deficits and inadequate transportation networks continue to hinder rapid implementation. To address these issues, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has initiated training workshops in collaboration with local governments. These sessions aim to strengthen the capabilities of local authorities to engage effectively with the AfCFTA, focusing on trade facilitation, investment, and industrial development. The World Bank projects that full implementation of the AfCFTA could lift 30 million people out of extreme poverty by 2035 and generate real income growth of approximately 450 billion U.S. dollars. Given these potential benefits, experts are calling for collective efforts to overcome remaining barriers and expedite the AfCFTA's implementation to drive sustainable economic growth and prosperity across Africa. #Africa #AfCFTA #Trade
