Australian Bureau of Statistics' latest National, State and Territory Population figures were released today. https://lnkd.in/eT6xW9qR Apart from Queensland and Western Australia, every other State/Territory experienced negative Net Interstate Migration (NIM) for 2022/23. This is very much the case for South Australia with -409 NIM for 2022/23. The benefits of positive NIM due to COVID and international border closures were predictably short-lived, despite what many were saying (and there were many!). The main driver for population change continues to be international migration - which without, would see South Australia's total population decline. The Federal Government's migration strategy going forward will need to seriously consider how to better harness international migration for regional parts of Australia and low-population growth cities while achieving their overarching goals of maximising the human capital of migrants and restoring the integrity of the migration programme. Migration policy shouldn't be viewed separately from population policy. They both must speak to one another. #migration #interstatemigration #australiangovernment #southaustralia
