With the curriculum nearly fully resourced, let’s explore the resource I’m MOST proud of…🥁 📌 The British Empire: how far was it transformed in the mid-nineteenth century? These new resources for secondary history teachers have been carefully planned and produced. Here are three reasons why I think they’re unmissable: With a clear focus and attention to detail, they tackle a subject that is sometimes dealt with superficially: the mid-nineteenth century British Empire. They deal with a difficult, yet fundamental issue in Britain’s past. Historians such as David Olusoga have warned school leaders about the danger of teaching a dishonest version of the past. These resources seek to do the opposite. The resources are shaped around an enquiry question investigating the extent of change to the British Empire during the nineteenth century. Thank you to Travis J. Bristol, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Education and Board Chair at the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, for presenting to the RPPL network in April’s Brown Bag Lunch! This session, “Becoming a Critical Educative Mentor: A Professional Learning Community for Veteran Teachers in an Urban School District”, explored three related research strands in the context of culturally responsive teacher professional learning:  1️⃣ The role of educational policies in shaping teacher workplace experiences and retention; 2️⃣ District and school-based professional learning communities; 3️⃣ The role of race and gender in educational settings.

Of those who say they know what school choice means, 64% have a favorable opinion. Just 24% unfavorable. Many teachers feel constrained by local school boards, state officials, and national opinion-makers when it comes to addressing the complex histories of slavery, racial violence, and race relations. Many public universities are facing the same pressures. Fortunately, private colleges and universities are stepping up to offer resources and support for K-12 teachers (and even public universities). This session will discuss political headwinds and the practical work of public-private collaborations." We have a wonderful panel of experts from two CIC member institutions —Austin College (TX) and Flagler College (FL) — and Yale's Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition.
