AJL's Dr. Joy Buolamwini and Barry Friedman of the Policing Project at NYU Law published an opinion piece in The New York Times today, discussing how the federal government can strengthen guidance to prevent irresponsible use of AI by law enforcement. What has the government gotten right? ➡️ Time constraints: Technologies that fail to prove their efficacy and are considered high-risk will be prohibited after August 2024. What needs to improve? 1️⃣ Unilateral waivers: The current approach allows for waivers with just a written justification, potentially weakening vital safeguards. 2️⃣ National security: Greater clarity is needed regarding national security exceptions to prevent them from being exploited as loopholes for avoiding responsibility. Read the full piece in The New York Times below and let us know your thoughts! https://lnkd.in/dZrAMsDG
