World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, first acknowledged in 2006 by Dr. Elizabeth Podnieks, who declared elder abuse and neglect to be "one of the most unrecognized, underreported, and unaddressed issues of our day." It was later established in 2011 by the United Nations, with a purpose to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect, and exploitation that older persons face, while promoting respect and dignity for this population as well. This year's theme is "Spotlight on Older Persons in Emergencies," to highlight the critical need to support older persons during crises.
