The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission just approved a transformative rule that mandates grid operators to plan 20 years ahead, considering renewable energy demands. When you think of electrical transmission, you might not associate it with making jet fuel or firing boilers at manufacturing plants. But transmission investments are equally important to those sectors. Clean electrons will also be used to create green hydrogen, serving industrial end uses that can’t be directly powered by electricity. Too many wind and solar projects are stuck in years-long interconnection queues, limiting our ability to access round-the-clock clean energy in regions where green hydrogen is most needed. Transmission improvements mean green hydrogen projects can look forward to a more stable and available clean energy supply. This is a pivotal move for our mission to decarbonize and reach net zero. Mapped: The Age of Energy Projects in Interconnection Queues, by State

Industry warnings about grid reliability have been echoed by many senators and commissioners alike, yet this administration is continuing a regulatory onslaught that will worsen an already mismanaged energy transition, increasing obstacles to price and availability stability. It's time for a rethink before we jeopardize grid reliability further. Positive steps by Ofgem to introduce a Queue Management process requiring grid connecting projects to hit key milestones or be at risk of being ejected from the connection queue. This should spur on some progress in otherwise stagnant projects and hopefully ensure that well managed and organised projects are able to come online more quickly and without undue delay.
