When you look at the success of some of the worlds biggest pharma companies (Novo Nordisk, I am looking at you 🫵 ), it becomes natural to think, whether there is a limit to medical progress 🤔 ? Whether there are things that will not happen, because it goes against commercial interests of those, who have the ressources to make it happen 😏 ? The discussion is not a new one. It pops up every now and then 🎈 ; that some progress is being held back because it's not in the interest of todays incumbents 💰 . Personally, I believe it to be more of a conspiracy theory 😵💫 than actual fact. For a couple of reasons: First of all, big pharma puts billions of dollars into research every single year to help advance new treatments for some of the most common and most serious diseases out there 💸 . They do so for a multitude of reasons, where future prospects of commercial success is of course one of them 🤑 . They need to keep the train moving in the right direction 🚂 . Second, when they do, all sorts of opportunities are created in its wake 🎆 . Discoveries are made that inspire new ideas in other places that again make the ecosystem around it thrive too and also move in the right direction 💡👨🔬 . Third, sometimes some of these new ideas inspire great entrepreneurs to think and act in novel ways that has the potential down the line to result in true paradigm shifts 💥 🚀 , and where plenty of backers with an interest in changing the status quo will help them run the extra miles to make it happen 😀 . So, in sum, there is no incentive to hold medical progress back and no real way of doing so, even if some might want to 👍 (which I don't think they want ☺️ ). #healthtech #startup #investing #innovation #breakthrough
