Yesterday Eric Mamer announced that upon the invitation of 🇫🇷 President Macron, 🇪🇺 President von der Leyen would join a trilateral meeting with 🇨🇳 President Xi Jinping: A good news for the European partners. 👉 Building European credibility 👉 Strengthening coherence 👉Leveraging the European position This is the net benefit of Europeanising bilateral meetings with the Chinese leadership. And a good practice to replicate across Europe! On top of the agenda for the common messages: 1 - China’s growing support to Russia war effort will have consequences (EU is getting ready for listing more Chinese companies) and the cost for China will increase. 2 - Chinese overcapacity and unfair trade practices will be addressed by using the defensive toolbox that the EU has put in place. 3 - Climate and global challenges, including biodiversity are areas for cooperation but we need to be 2 to Tango. The Chinese leadership has a room for manoeuvre. But Europe has moved from hearing words to taking action. Europe has agency but does China has an offer for Europe? That is what we will see!

Joined #rthk in Hong Kong to discuss White House reports that a Xi-Biden meeting will go ahead on the sidelines at #apec later this month in San Francisco. My full comments: As expected, we haven't seen confirmation yet from China that a meeting will take place and perhaps won't hear something from the Chinese side until one actually does. It seems clear that avoiding significant new provocations before the meeting takes place will be necessary for it to go forward. No one expects this meeting to produce a major breakthrough. Keep in mind that optimists had hoped for a summit this year and that's not going to happen. Rather, simply a meeting on the sidelines is all we'll get, and hopefully a month or two of calmer relations before US presidential campaigning heats up in the new year and drives the hawks again. However, it might be the case that we'll see some modest announcements, perhaps on #climatechange cooperation. We might also see new efforts to cooperate on #fentanyl. Beijing will seek reassurances on #taiwan and all the more so with elections scheduled there in early 2024. We've heard there has been some positive dialogue on global economic matters, but it's not clear yet what this might entail specifically or whether it will mature before APEC takes place. 🔥After 4 years...EU-China Summit is happening NOW!   Can they solve the *huge divisions*? 🤔    What's happening: EU leaders are in Beijing to meet up with Xi Jinping and other Chinese high-profile leaders.    It’s the 1st in-person summit since the pandemic between the two, making it extra significant.    But in fact, it didn’t start peacefully...   【First】  Italy just announced that they’re going to withdraw from China’s Belt and Road Initiative.    【Second】  EU said they wouldn’t tolerate "unfair competition" / a “trade deficit” anymore💸    (According to EU, there’s a nearly $431.7-billion trade deficit with China!) 【Third】  EU raised its concern over China's support for Russia.    🚨Basically, it started with EU bringing loads of issues to the table + waiting for China’s response!    On one hand, China held a strong stance --> telling the EU to stay away from engaging in any confrontation.    At the same time, China expressed its willingness to cooperate --> to make EU an important economic partner, clarifying restrictions on cross-border data flows.    Xi Jinping said,    “Standing at a new starting point for China-EU relations, we need to sum up historical experience… demonstrate wisdom and responsibility, and stay committed to the correct positioning of our comprehensive strategic partnership.”    💡This indicates 1 key thing --> EU is changing how it deals with China!    From “decoupling” to a safer, more collaborative relationship.    Despite holding very different opinions, both sides are open to further talks and agreed to move towards a more “balanced” trade.    Politics is all about finding common ground, and I think this meeting sets an important first step.    Political divisions are inevitable... but what truly counts is how we handle them! 🙌    Do you agree?    What do you think about the current EU-China relations?
