I had a few things on my Zurich itinerary we didn’t end up doing, like a sauna at a cool looking bathhouse and a reservation at a landmark restaurant, Kronenhalle. The sauna didn’t work out because I didn’t buy tickets in advance and it was completely booked. The restaurant didn’t suit my mood when the day for the meal arrived, even though I had been really excited about it while planning. I wanted something more casual and light instead of fancy, long, and heavy. 💡 Lesson learned: I need to be more diligent about booking tickets when I know I really want to do something, BUT these hiccups and change of plans were *SUPER* easy to navigate because: 1️⃣ 💫 I make my plans loose and keep alternative options in my back pocket. ------> 💯 More specifically, I start a trip-planning note in my phone as soon as I know I’m going. I start by jotting down a list of places (museums, landmarks, restaurants, cafes) I want to visit, activities I want to do, and info about transportation, historical context, language, and neighborhoods. As my list grows, I start plugging my “must dos” into a day-based itinerary, and buy tickets or make reservations for the items that require pre-booking. Doing the above well means I can spend my boots-on-the-ground time doing and enjoying instead of researching with my nose in my phone. 2️⃣ 💫 I stayed flexible in mind. ------> 💯 I know in the past I would’ve dug my heels in about Kronnenhalle and felt obligated to go since it’s so famous, regardless of my mood. I’d focus on all I was losing from changing my plans, instead of what I was gaining: a meal at a traditional, local-full fondue restaurant outside the city center, which had incredible views of the city. We got to drive through the residential hills of Zurich, something we wouldn’t have done otherwise. And we got to have a fab fondue! And most importantly, I respected myself by not forcing myself to do what I didn’t want or need to do. ------> 💯 I accepted the sauna was a miss, and we ended up taking a long walk to a far-away coffee shop I had my eyes on.
