Electricity + caffeine = customer growth Or so that's what Starbucks seems to be thinking. One of the hesitations about an electric 🚗 I've had and have heard from others is the ease and location of charging far(ther) from home, especially when charging areas aren't at a location designed for a quick stop. Placing charging stations at a known entity intended to be a pit stop 🏁 would certainly draw me in during a short road trip. Curious to see when or if others follow the lead or if available infrastructure for chargers becomes a draw for site selection.

Bit of a random one . But I am a coffee drinker or I’m partial to a hot chocolate, many services have drive throughs and most of them are in a straight line , but I have always thought why there is a height limit of 2.5/2.7 mtrs when they would probably do 10x more custom by having it high enough for box vans ( 3.0/3.2mtrs) surely it’s the drivers mainly that need the coffee the most and have little time to stop .. I think the coffee companies have it backwards .. cars should go in and vans should drive through in my opinion. When I have to go out on the road I won’t take a box van unless I really really have to . I take a panel van that fits in the drive through 🤦🏼♂️ Starbucks or Costa for you ?

I can’t believe Starbucks drive thru doesn’t have this, it seems so simple. As the next in my series of what Brian Niccol should do with Starbucks, he should take the lead from automated car washes. First why I feel I’m qualified to speak on this - when I was 16 years old I got my first W2 job working at Taco Bell, I was quickly promoted from front register to drive thru, in our district, driver thru times were THE kpi employees were held to. This was the dream position within Taco Bell douglasville. Within a few fridays I had the lowest drive thru time in the state. All because we had this idea of having one person take money then direct the customer to a parking spot where someone else would quickly bring them their food. 14 second drive thru times. Until I got reprimanded for being too good. Now days of course every fast food pulls you into the spot. Back to Starbucks - they need to install the automated car washes license plate readers, when you pull up you should be presented with your last orders and be able to order by number. “I’ll take favorites number 4” instead of “I’ll take a grande non fat half whip double shot sugar free vanilla latte” This makes the drive thru process that much more efficient. You tie the license plate to their Starbucks account and orders become numbers, it’s the first customized menu. Staff does less talking, husband has less opportunity to mess up wife’s order. Without having access to the data, I bet 4 out of 5 orders in drive thru are repeats from the same person in the same car with the same order. Why not make it automated? Human still confirms order. Next phase you implement a 4 digit pin that lets you charge “to the car” without fumbling with a phone or credit card. That’s my plan for innovating Starbucks drive thru, less people coming inside Starbucks, more room for it to be a third place.

Brand value and customer relationships are so critical! Pre-COVID, Starbucks was a go-to "third place" destination for me. Now...not so much. This article analyzes where it went wrong and holds lessons for other companies that compete by providing customers distinctive experiences. -              Comfy chairs have largely disappeared, replaced by hard wooden ones, the better to push people back out to their homes and offices. The company has also turned finding electrical outlets to plug in computers or phones into somewhat of a treasure hunt. -              Printed orders have replaced handwriting on cups — once upon a time including compliments or pick-me-ups — removing the human touch from its famously handcrafted beverages. -              Starbucks’ loyalty program focuses on the price of what customers buy, rather than the value of what they drink, eat, and experience. -              Mobile ordering places you and your in-house order in an invisible queue of indeterminate and sometimes seemingly interminable length. And most importantly, based on my recent visit to a Starbucks store and the photo attached to this post, it seems they've strayed too far from the original product. Unfortunately, the focus on convenience and speed has compromised the experience for customers who seek to enjoy high-quality tea or coffee. Starbucks is charging up⚡– with plans to bring reliable, high-power #EVcharging to over 100 of its stores through a new strategic collaboration with Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, a joint venture of MN8 Energy and Mercedes-Benz AG Benz Group AG. The vision for the program, announced today, starts with the co-location of industry-leading 400 kW #electricvehicle (EV) chargers at Starbucks locations along Interstate 5 (I-5) – a critical west coast travel corridor spanning from Canada to Mexico. Why start there? To grow the reach of EV charging in California, which has 1.2 million EVs registered, the largest amount in the nation, representing 36% of total U.S. electric vehicle ownership. The High Power Charging hubs at Starbucks stores will use industry-leading charging solutions that can provide charging speeds up to 400 kW and support vehicles with a wide voltage range -- all with the same high standards for maintenance and reliability shared with our other hubs. The company has also turned finding electrical outlets to plug in computers or phones into somewhat of a treasure hunt. Printed orders have replaced handwriting on cups — once upon a time including compliments or pick-me-ups — removing the human touch from its famously handcrafted beverages. Gone is the rich aroma of coffee beans roasting and grinding; instead, there are now ready-to-use sealed packages. And in June 2024, the company announced it was going to offer value meals for goodness sakes! Starbucks’ vaunted loyalty program is also self-commoditizing. Despite increasing sales overall, its tracking of purchases focuses customers on the price of what they buy — especially when the company switched it from tracking items to total dollars spent — rather than the value of what they drink, eat, and experience. The explicit bargain of “you buy more, and we’ll give you something for free” comes with the implicit message that “you’re overpaying on each cup, so we can afford to throw in a freebie every once in a while.” The company long ago added drive-throughs at many suburban locations, which also increased sales while decreasing the on-premise experience. It divided the attention of baristas, increased the length of service, and took up space that could be used to enhance the in-person experience. Mobile ordering places you and your in-house order in an invisible queue of indeterminate and sometimes seemingly interminable length. You end up bumping elbows with in-and-out convenience buyers, hearing and seeing them go in and out for the entire time you try to enjoy your time away from home and work. And now some Starbucks venues removed all the chairs — comfy and hard alike — to focus on mobile orders."
