Another cool project I had the opportunity to be part of was The Eternal Cylinder. Today I will write a little bit about the behind-the-scenes porting of this project Our task was to bring the game to the Next-Gen consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, which were still relatively new at that time. I was looking forward to working with the new controllers, features of the next generation, and improved performance. Of course, this was more relevant to Sony, as their next-gen features with Adaptive Triggers, Haptic Feedback, and Activities would not leave anyone indifferent. The goal was to unlock the potential of 9th-generation consoles. To achieve this, we needed to enhance visual effects using RTX and implement new console features. For this porting, we had to upgrade the engine version to 4.27 (as 4.24 did not support integration with 9th-generation consoles), and it was quite a challenge. The strongest "shot in the foot" was the SkookumScript plugin, which was not supported by the new version of the engine. 😬 For the QA team, this meant numerous test iterations to ensure that the plugin and the game in general worked, at least approximately, as on the previous engine version. During the work, certification issues for the new consoles also arose. We approached it systematically: - Identified and localized issues - Optimized mechanics for the new generation consoles - Updated SDK - Fixed and retested all certification test cases For me, the most interesting part of the project was the implementation of new PlayStation features - PS5 Activities, Adaptive Triggers, and Haptic Feedback. Our quality control team closely collaborated with Dev and GD teams, providing feedback on control schemes and usage scenarios for new mechanics. It's been a while since I played the game, but I still remember those amazing sensations when we finally implemented adaptive triggers for water shooting mechanics and vibrations during encounters with giant NPCs. I highly recommend checking out this game on PS5 or Xbox Series X! 😉 #casestudy #project #qa #porting #playstation #xbox Read more in our case study 🔻🔻🔻

First, Baldur's Gate 3 continues to amaze and thrill me and my player group. Congratulations to everyone involved, what a triumph! Second, Larian Studios, I'm not sure why you are breaking cross-play so often. First the Mac and PC versions being out of sync for so long (killing my group until we hacked around it) and now for the Xbox players stuck behind. I must be missing something, but it seems like unless you are changing the network layer directly, you could change the verification of 'same version' allows cross-play to be a 'latest available version for the platform' to allow cross play. I haven't programmed in longer than I want to admit, so I'm legitimately curious why this isn't how you approached it. We used to allow versions to be out of sync as long as file formats or fundamental network topology hadn't changed. One game kept a list of 'compatible versions' to allow that, now, you could keep that list centrally (since definitionally, if you are going cross platform, you have network access.) Anyway, my $.02 https://lnkd.in/geYNi2gu

This weekend I ended up playing 3 very interesting games: Rise of the Ronin: it is shaping up to be a fantastic souls-like experience. It boasts a beautiful world, a compelling story, and the punishing combat a la Nioh and Soulsborne. However, I feel the map is a bit cluttered and I end up collecting more junk than valuable loot at this moment. - I am about 4h in so far only though! Dragon's Dogma 2: the game definitely doubles down on what made the original game great, making it more accessible to newcomers. However, performance is quite appalling, and the MTX issue on launch day will likely not go away until Capcom properly addresses it. - I am about 6h in. Horizon: Forbidden West (PC): I mean it is one of the best PS5 games coming to PC! I finished it on PS5 with almost all trophies, and I will likely end up playing it to get all achievements this time round. Performance is excellent, though it does need an NVME drive to come close to the speed of the PS5 in terms of fast travel and respawning. - I am about 2h in. What did you play this weekend?

One thing I’m looking forward to at the Game Developers Conference is learning HOW THE HELL Nintendo made Tears of the Kingdom run on the Switch! With 7-year-old hardware, and an open world map 2.5 times bigger than Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I keep asking myself how has the Nintendo Switch NOT exploded from running it. 🤔 Now I’ll finally get an answer. I’ll leave a link with more info on the “Tunes of the Kingdom” panel in the comments. #Nintendo #GDC #gamedev #gamesindustry #videogames
