Hospitality skills to build the perfect resume: We all know the importance of the resume in terms of ‘selling’ ourselves to prospective employers. A good resume lets a recruiter see we have the skills and experience they are searching for, to carry us through the first filter and into the all-important interview stage. That said, few if any of us can expect to cover all the requirements of a job description, whether in hospitality or any other field. After submitting my tailored CV, cover letter, and personal statement for a role in operations at a particular hotel, belonging to a renowned hotel chain, I received a platitude in the form of a rejection template almost a month later. Despite having a master's degree and 12 years of relevant experience in the field, along with over 7 CPD certifications. More importantly, I have certainty of direction. My journey in this industry began during my teen years, consistently exceeding expectations while keeping my eye on the next step and acquiring skills for each role. From front-line positions to mid-level management and then being at the helm, I maintained great relationships and fostered transparent communication. Devised road maps for my team to grow and excel in their respective roles, meticulously working on strategies and breaking them down into bite-sized pieces for the team to follow. Conducted significant research to enhance all four stages of a guest's life cycle by implementing technology and proactive communication, constructing tailor-made experiences around guests' personal interests. Finally got to execute this following the DMAIC framework, which boosted the business volume of a 4-star resort. Spearheaded several projects in marketing, F&B product and appeal, and initiated new activities for a more fulfilling experience. I guess all I'm trying to demonstrate is the genuine passion and drive I have for the field that gives me the tireless energy to learn and accomplish more, which made the discouraging knockdown pill all the more bitter. There is a huge gap in the recruitment process that hiring managers need to fix. The over-reliance on AI and ATS is hurting their chances of obtaining talent. "We take hiring seriously" reads one of the core company values, but this experience felt insincere. Corporations underline and emphasize the importance of protecting their image and taking swift corrective action if their interests are in peril.
