Week 2 Reflections at Techstars Berlin 2023!
Phew! Week 2 has just blown by at Techstars Berlin 2023, and Mentor Madness was nothing short of... well, madness! But every conversation, every bit of advice, was a step toward crystallising enzum's direction.
An interesting revelation? Sometimes our CTO Ana Gerlich and I would hear diametrically opposite advice from two mentors within a span of hours. I guess that juxtaposition of differing perspectives was a testament to the dynamic nature of what we're trying to do here.
The richness of these sessions brought to mind a quote by Walt Whitman: "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes." This week reminded me that embracing contradictions, rather than avoiding them, can lead to deeper insights and breakthroughs.
Week 3, we’re coming for you - slightly disheveled, very caffeinated, and ready for whatever you throw our way! ☕️🚀

Niche tech markets. Trying to disrupt an industry that only sees Stenography as "Court Reporters" and "Captioners" instead of as a means of advancement in manual human input...not so easy.
So I'm starting at square one because when you believe in your vision, your skills, and those you surround yourself with, the journey sells itself.

As an artist and art collector myself, I'm a huge fan of these platforms. Yet it feels like the growing number of new platforms for artists has brought about a notable disparity between established, elite artists with existing reputations and the numerous emerging talents seeking recognition and opportunities. Do these platforms focus predominantly on capitalizing on the reputation of established and famous artists, leaving little room for new artists to flourish? New artists face difficulties gaining visibility and recognition for their work.
Also the lack of real opportunities for rising artists can be disheartening. While famous artists may have built a reputation in the traditional art world, it is crucial to foster an environment that supports and promotes new emerging artists.
Platforms that provide mentorship programs, curated showcases for new artists, target the right audiences and buyers, and highlight fresh talent through periodic promotions could be effective steps in the right direction and help bridge this gap.
In fact, some galleries claim to showcase artists, but they are just profiting on a pay-for-exposure gallery model. Many do not invest in marketing or promoting beyond an artist's contributions, yet they also take a percentage of sales made during an exhibition as a commission. The system is broken.
The demographics of art buyers on these platforms also deserves some attention. Traditional art buyers and traditional collectors seem hesitant to embrace the technological trends and advancements in the art world. This preference for established artists or reluctance to invest in digital art limits opportunities for emerging talents to gain any kind of publicity through these channels.
As an artist on Makersplace, I quickly got ~150k views for my work. However, I noticed that the majority of sales are inclined towards fantasy art and pixel art, raising concerns about the presence of my target market being represented. I've sold more artwork at local art shows with fewer attendees than online. Understanding the demographics of buyers and investors on these platforms could help me and other artists refine our strategies and reach the right audience.
My point being, the challenges for emerging artists on these new platforms are evident, although I do believe there is potential for positive change. By addressing the disparity between elite and rising artists, promoting opportunities for new talents, and having a better understanding of the demographics and preferences of art buyers and collectors using these platforms, these platforms can create a more inclusive and thriving ecosystem for ALL artists, then maybe they'll transform the art world.
