There’s more! Another new major player, this time from construction, joins the ranks of National Ambassador at my clients National Cyber Resilience Centre Group
Seeing how quickly Sir Robert McAlpine made a strategic decision to become part of this national programme between big business and law enforcement, to help small business and third sector become more resilient to online crime, is a powerful statement about how they value their own supply chain.
Supply chain is critical. Many smaller business, or freelancers and contractors, have no or little technical cyber knowledge in house. Many believe online crime doesn’t affect them that much, and many who do, simply don’t have the time to navigate the mass online noise about what they should do about it. Often those in big business don’t understand that, they have no experience of working a 12+ hr day then having to do their own bookkeeping, accounts, ordering and marketing themselves by night and weekend too.
Small business life can be rewarding, it can be hard, but it certainly isn’t for the naive. Smart and hard working people in small businesses are creating employment in areas that truly need it, serving communities that others won’t, delivering goods and services in high risk environments, or enabling innovations this country needs.
The idea they are ‘crazy not to take more cyber action’ is what’s a naive assumption! Running small business is about priorities and finding time efficient ways to solve problems. Entrepreneurs in particular are very good at that. So unless clear information that’s time efficient to navigate and digest is accessible, found in places they trust, they will not add risk to their business being distracted.
This smart and strong collaboration between big business and police is changing all that, and changing it quickly. Sir Robert McAlpine attitude that supply chain businesses are critical partners, all of them, even solo contractors is so refreshing to hear and watch them take action like this to truly serve their own supply chain.
I have learned so much from working with Andy Black and Rachel Lloyd-Moseley as I helped them make this decision, on both risk and value of small business in the construction supply chain. Its excited me to know companies as large as this, place priority on those they work with from the SME community, and explore ways to help them rather than simply impose requirements on them.
The National Ambassador programme at National Cyber Resilience Centre Group is dynamic and impactful. I’m helping my clients build a portfolio of sectoral representation across industry that will inform and support making the UK a safer place to, operate, buy or sell online.
