An ECO dream-team recently published a Climate Resilience Dashboard for the Lake Tahoe region. This dashboard, funded by the California Tahoe Conservancy and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), helps to monitor and record progress on climate action strategies that will help guide the long-term health of the Lake Tahoe watershed and the safety of its communities. As Tahoe's climate changes—and extreme weather events such as wildfire and prolonged drought become more common—regional governments, residents, and visitors to the region will need to implement and practice resilience strategies. The dashboard tracks progress across four goals and 14 outcomes, including Air Quality and Extreme Heat, Wildfire Resilience, Renewable Energy, Economic Resilience, Access to Housing, Lake Conditions, Transportation, and Equitable Protection. Clicking through the dashboard gives you access to metrics and data, recommended actions, and resilience strategies for each of the 14 outcomes. “Lake Tahoe is already experiencing the impacts of climate change and we must keep making progress as a region to confront emerging threats to the lake and reduce the vulnerability of our communities,” TRPA Executive Director Julie Regan said. “Science, research, and data are essential for decision makers, residents, and property owners to lead the region into a more resilient climate future.” We were honored to work on this project, and we are excited for the Tahoe community as they look toward a bright, healthy future. New innovative tool launches today to help local communities adapt to climate change. The Local Climate Adaptation Tool (LCAT) has been developed by a team from University of Exeter and Cornwall Council, with input from more than 50 other local authority areas across the UK. Decision-makers involved in the development include councils, health and emergency services.  LCAT has been designed to help local organisations increase their adaptation response to local climate change, something a recent government report describes as having ‘failed to keep pace with the worsening reality of climate risk.’ Climate Change Committee https://lnkd.in/ewK36ss5

Last month, President Biden announced the release of the Fifth National Climate Assessment, and its findings are eye-opening 👀 Thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration’s climate and clean energy agenda, we are making progress in the fight against climate change—but the National Climate Assessment makes clear that there is still much work that needs to be done. Beyond the need to rapidly reduce planet-warming emissions, the Assessment also found that nature-based solutions—such as conservation and restoration—are a cost-effective mitigation strategy that can provide additional benefits like improved climate resilience and strengthened biodiversity. The 5th National Climate Assessment released today is a call to action.    With a chapter focused on the Southeast, and a new focus on environmental justice and economics, the report highlights how the changing climate is already having severe impacts on our environment, economy, and people. Our region stands to bear the brunt of extreme heat and sea-level rise, especially in under-resourced Black and Brown communities. It's scary that reports are needed to "highlight" the drastic impact of #climatechange in the world. It's even scarier that our politicians are hiding the truth. I've noticed that more and more reports point out an unfortunate revelation - That the importance of climate change lies within the business sector, we cannot rely on our goverments to do the right thing while our earth is screaming for #climateaction. “Climate change is expensive, deadly and preventable, according to the new National Climate Assessment, the most sweeping, sophisticated federal analysis of climate change compiled to date. Released every five years, the National Climate Assessment is a congressionally mandated evaluation of the effects of climate change on American life. This new fifth edition paints a picture of a nation simultaneously beset by climate-driven disasters and capable of dramatically reducing emissions of planet-warming gasses in the near future. Here are the three big takeaways from the Fifth National Climate Assessment. Climate change makes life more expensive: Food, housing, labor – it all gets pricier as the Earth heats up. Climate change makes people sick and too often kills them: The most obvious risk? Extreme weather, particularly heat. Climate change threatens people's special, sacred places and practices: The places, cultural practices, and traditions that anchor many communities are also in flux because of climate change such as indigenous communities. Addressing fossil fuel-driven climate change can help people live healthier lives. Climate change provides us with an opportunity to address inequities and injustices.”
