March 2024 marked the end of my time at VML Commerce, concluding an epic seven-year journey with a fantastic team. Together, we built VML Commerce into what I believe was the world's leading creative commerce agency—ironically, yet another agency brand that no longer exists. Afterward, I took a much-needed break from the industry. I traveled, welcomed family visits from abroad (hi Mom!), tackled numerous home projects, and spent quality time with my family—even witnessing my daughter graduate (from Pre-K, no less!). Stepping back allowed me to view the agency world from a different perspective. And it’s clear our industry is going through a period of upheaval that no amount of Cannes Rosé can hide. Agencies are reaching for scale - at all costs - in a race to stay profitable. The cycle of merge-and-cut means decades of experience are being lost. In many ways, creativity is being commoditized, devalued, and ultimately automated. But as more once-valued brands get merged into homogeneous monoliths, exciting opportunities are emerging from small, nimble disruptors. Because especially in this age of AI, creative ideas and human relationships matter more than ever. I’m back at it now, excited to take on the next challenge. What that will be, I’m not yet entirely sure. But I do know that every setback has ultimately led to a positive outcome, pushing me to explore new opportunities.
