Radio distribution could be at stake… and most radio leaders ignore it. These days, the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC’23) is debating the future of the lower UHF band in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. If, as a result of the conference, digital terrestrial television (DTT) is expelled from that band, this could affect radio in two ways: 1) It would probably make the maintenance of the infrastructure currently used for DTT broadcasts untenable for any other users who share that infrastructure, including linear radio in FM and DAB/DAB+. 2) It may jeopardize any change to develop 5G Broadcast and, with it, the possibility to bring radio linear services to mobile devices free of charge for consumers   I hope my contribution for the most recent issue of RedTech News sheds light on this important yet under considered topic: https://lnkd.in/eiFZXced. New from me: At a recent panel on the future of the UHF band speakers put forward different visions of the future of 470—694 MHz. Late last year at the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-23), the UHF band held on to its primary broadcast service allocation. In Europe, current regulations protect the band for broadcasting use until at least 2030. What happens after this date, however, has not yet been decided. Panellists at a recent panel agreed that countries would have differing requirements in the future. Jonas Wessel, Director of the Resource Management Department at the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS), said that although the current state of terrestrial broadcasting in Sweden is stable, the country is moving towards a scenario in 2033 where many broadcasters will eventually migrate out of the UHF band. Meanwhile, Jaume Pujol, who chairs the Working Policy Group of BROADCAST NETWORKS EUROPE, a group that represents terrestrial operators, presented his vision of the UHF band as a “European Cultural Band”. He said the broadcasting industry is investing in various technologies to improve image and sound quality. Gain and Directivity Antennas do not radiate equally in all directions - only isotropic sources radiate equally in all directions, and this is only a theoretical entity. Real antennas exhibit gain in certain directions, where the available power is concentrated in a particular direction, and they have a pattern. Antenna theory of directivity and gain is important in many fields, whether for various wireless systems, radio communications or broadcasting. #antenna #airplux
