Charity means different things to different people. And as a representative of the excellent City Harvest London, I've visited literally hundreds of charities in and around the London area, all who do similar, but different, things. Some, like the photo I took below, where children will literally beg for food outside in a carpark where a foodbank has been set up. Others where hundreds queue up for a meal in a Soup Kitchen, braving the cold wintery weather. Still others, where local community will deliver food around to families and vulnerable people. Some where locals will pay a small amount to choose the food they might want. Either way - it starts, in the heart, with food. It drives us - and you all, to keep doing what you're doing. We might express ourselves in different ways - but often we just want the same things. That's what is amazing on the #charity journey. There is no charity that is exactly the same. They all do things different, to suit the environment where they serve. So whether you are working in supported housing, a soup kitchen, elderly care home, a food bank, a social supermarket, or a school or a nursery or something that looks a bit different - no one should go hungry. Surprisingly for a company whose main products are Christmas-based December is actually quite a quiet month for us work-wise…all this year's orders are delivered, the 2024 range is finished and ready to launch and all our clients are busy making sure their customers have a very merry Christmas...so what do we do with ourselves? We enjoy the festive season of course...but we also like to spare a thought for those not so fortunate. Here are some of the things we have been up to over the past week or so. We have been supplying crackers to local charities and events to help support them with their fundraising efforts, including donating; - a huge collection of provisions for Poole Foodbank - 40 trays of crackers for family hampers to BCP Social Care - 160 sparkly silver crackers to the Forest Holme Hospice for their Christmas party  - Christmas crackers for Ringwood Food bank's hampers and goodie bags - Christmas crackers for gift bags for the Macmillan Ball - A box of crackers for Coombe House School Raffle  - Christmas crackers for Prama Life, Dorset Children's Foundation, Julia's House, Ringwood Veteran's Breakfast Club and the Royal Marine's Charity... We love the #Dinesmart initiative. So simple. So effective. You know something works when the people it’s aimed at give more than you asked for. An easily managed $2 per bill is often viewed as ‘not enough’ by diners, who proceed to make it $10 or $20 or $50 instead. That’s what we call “smart” comms. No demands. No awkwardness. Just plant a seed-idea and allow the results to blossom. All venues should be on board.

When are Nonprofit Culinary Events a scam? TRANSPARENCY!! That’s what is needed most. During our last community kitchen event, something remarkable happened. As we were distributing meals, we unexpectedly ran out of takeaway packs. Rushing to a nearby store to get more, we met Olamilekan a food vendor. Instead of accepting payment, Olamilekan chose to donate the packs to us. He was deeply moved by our efforts, something he had never seen in his community before, and wanted to be a part of it. Even if he was selling food , he didn’t feel uncomfortable about us giving out food around him. We salute Olamilekan’s generosity and his willingness to support his community. Now, imagine a world filled with more people like Olamilekan—where sharing and giving back are the norms, and everyone has enough to eat. This vision is within our reach, but it starts with each of us. Be like Olamilekan. T H I N K S M A L L 24—28 June is the UK’s biggest celebration of small charities. It’s a chance for small charities just like us to raise awareness of the essential role we play in our communities and to celebrate the incredible donors and volunteers that make our work possible.  Nottingham has a fantastic network of small charities; supporting our residents and their families it so many ways. It's hard to imagine a world without these charities who provide so much practical and emotional support to people of all ages. Unfortunately we have seen some doors close recently due to a significant reduction in available funding coupled with rising costs but also rising demand. Its vital to keep raising the profile of our work and highlighting our impact to secure our future. Small Charity Week is an annual campaign to celebrate and support the value that small charities add to communities. Small charities make up 96% of the voluntary sector in the UK and hold many communities together – providing food, safety, shelter, mental health support, and financial assistance and advice. This year the campaign seeks to highlight the transformative role that small charities can play in partnership with government to strengthen local communities. Giving Tuesday Spotlight: Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House This Giving Tuesday, a day globally celebrated for generosity and giving, we invite you to consider supporting a cause dear to us: The Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House (DTESNH). Both founders of CM Agility have been actively volunteering here, with Carina also serving as the Board Secretary. This year's focus is the Community Drop-In (CDI) Lunch program, a cornerstone of the DTES community. We're committed to ensuring its continuation throughout 2024. This program is more than just a meal service; it's a hub for connection and rest, providing over 15,600 breakfasts and 9,400 lunches last year alone. Facing the challenge of rising food costs, our goal is bold but vital: to raise $18,000. This will help us combat food insecurity and ensure the right to nutritious food for all members of our community.
