This article raises such an important question, whose job is it to protect the integrity of truth in democratic campaigns? From an information literacy perspective librarians have always tried to take up this fight for understanding information and how to critically look for reliable sources but as the article suggests there is only so much one industry can do when misinformation has now become so entrenched in our political process and day to day life. When the 2022 COVID 19: Australian News & Misinformation Longitudinal Study. Canberra: News Media Research Centre, University of Canberra asked who should be responsible for mitigating misinformation 78% said individuals should use common sense, 76% said social media platforms should do more and 59% said it's the government's responsibility to make sure the public is not exposed. However it is incredibly difficult to mitigate when these sources of misinformation are actively trying to trick people into believing half truths that may seem reasonable, social media platforms are struggling so much to stamp out the overwhelming number of bot accounts spreading misinformation they haven't even touched the real accounts sharing them and some of the misinformation is blatantly stated by our own government representatives. Unfortunately the fact is if we have any hope of changing the tide against misinformation into the future we desperately need an impartial agency created to combat misinformation in our country that can be a source of fact checking for individuals, a campaigner of enforcing change within social media and other platforms and an advocate for enshrining information literacy into our education framework to ensure all our future citizens are critical thinkers.

The influence of money in our political system, the centralisation of power and lack of accountability is concerning. TOP's Democracy & Governance Policy includes lowering the MMP threshold, limiting the influence of large donors, expanding civics education and introducing modern, participatory governance platforms (like Citizen’s Assemblies). We also support a shift towards a four-year Parliamentary term, establishing an Anti-Corruption Commission, and the appointment of a Future Generations Commissioner. A vibrant democracy needs active participants from across society - voters, media, private and public sector, candidates and politicians all have a role to play. What are your thoughts? I hope the next Government will pick up and run with the DCMS / Ministers support for the UK Youth Parliament and commitment to a DCMS formal review of its long-term future, as well calling for proposals/options on the work of a national youth council to take up the empty seat left by the #BritishYouthCouncil. During the election we all have an opportunity to support young peoples most popular campaigns (mental health, cost of living et al) and ensure that we embed a youthled framework in society that amplifies, represents, influences decision-makers. The norm not the novelty, a policy not a project. 📣 Calling all first-time voters…Vote4OurRuleofLaw Fellowship is here! In 2019, only 42% of eligible voters in the age bracket 16/18-24 turned out for the European Parliament (EP) elections. This is drastically below the participation rates in national elections of many Member States and highlights a deep-rooted detachment of young EU citizens from the EU. Vote4OurRuleofLaw is here to change it! Very interesting read on the development of local government:
