My most recent 🌅 OGP Horizons 🌅 piece is about why we need open government approaches to crypto-asset regulation. Highlights: - Many countries are already successfully putting regulations in place to ensure that money laundering rules cover virtual assets. - The article links to a longer explainer with case studies and concrete approaches to involve media, civil society, and watchdog organizations. - Finally, the article offers lessons from other processes (counter terrorism finance, foreign agents registration laws) on how to regulate finance without curbing civil liberties. Thanks to Claudia Marcela Hernández for input.

We want to hear from you! Views are being sought on the current approach to the oversight of certain crypto-assets for AML/CFT purposes. This includes feedback on potential options for the regulation of such activities – and how the cost of regulation should be funded. A number of options are highlighted in a Discussion Paper published on the Government Engagement Hub. Responses will help to inform consideration of how best to position the Island to take advantage of the opportunities and mitigate the risks associated with crypto-asset businesses. We are inviting further consideration of our current approach, particularly in light of recent international developments, including the adoption of the Markets in Crypto-Assets (‘MiCA’) Regulation, which is scheduled to come into force across EU Member States on 31 December 2024.
