Another glimpse of the 2023 results from LF AI & Data Foundation As many of us are preparing to fly to Tokyo for the Open Source Summit Japan (Dec 5-6), I am gathering data for my talk and thought to summarize 2023 in 1 slide. Great momentum for open source AI collaboration. We've added 11 new projects to the foundation. 22 new members joined us and several are in flight between now and EOY. Our projects welcomed over 7500 new contributors! We've launched the Generative AI Commons with over 40 companies and 100+ participants. Enjoyed seeing this profile of Yann as part of the Time100 Impact Awards. I've personally seen the power of the open source movement in software, operating systems, and the Web and remain convinced that open research, open standards, and open systems will be the building blocks of the next generation of technology. AI systems 'will constitute basically the repository of all human knowledge. Did you know that Ada Lovelace predicted that a theoretical Babbage Engine (what eventually went on to become the computers we know today) could be far more capable than just mathematical computation and could, one day, start creating things like art, and music? Neither did I, until on October 10th (strangely, Ada Lovelace day), myself and Andrew Cheung started doing some research for this event. Even better did you know there was a Babbage engine in the science museum? Some of you may have seen the 17 minute TED talk Mr Suleyman conducted recently. It was very well done, eloquent and yet accessible. I am halfway through this book of his now on the subject and find it both engrossing and tremendously valuable for providing a contextual level understanding not only of AI but how it will fit into the very fabric of society in a ubiqutious and myriad of ways in the near future. Of course Mr Suleyman was deeply involved with Google for many years and then founded Inflection but has now joined Microsoft as its Chief Of AI, which I think is very telling and a testament to the advantage and supremacy that the organization wields today in the space. It will be exciting to see just what he can achieve with the endless capability and capacity of this remarkable organization behind him moving forward. Finally, I cannot but help point out the poignant parallels between him and another pioneer of technology, Steve Jobs. Both of them are of Syrian heritage whose parents held modest jobs as immigrants and faced many battles to practice their actual professions but made sacrifices so their children could achieve great things. In a growingly xenophobic, anti-immigration and prejudicial world, let’s take a moment to recognize how vital the disenfranchised ‘newcomers’ and ‘outsiders’ of society are to our collective growth and progress. Intellect and ambition know no borders. And one can’t help but notice that they even somewhat dress the same. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone, not just those in technology. We live in a new world now and it is better to be informed and involved than not. Either an active participant in the new paradigm or a passive recipient of it. We all have a stake in how this plays out. After all, a good play has many acts and we’re only in the early stages of this one!

Last November we released LoRAX, an open source LLM inference server capable of serving thousands of fine-tuned LLMs simultaneously. And today we're launching LoRA Land: a showcase of what LoRAX can do and why you should check it out! There were two things we wanted to prove when building this demo: 1. That small open source LLMs can outperform the best commercial models (GPT-4) when fine-tuned to a narrow and specific task. 2. Serving all these fine-tuned models can be cost effective enough to run on a single GPU, while still scalable enough to support many concurrent users.
