Today, our thoughts turn to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, a day that forever impacted the course of #history. It's hard to believe that 22 years have passed since those tragic events unfolded, leaving an undeniable mark on our hearts and minds. This fateful day changed not only our region, but the entire world. Amidst the tragedy, stories of heroism and unity emerged — from the bravery and selflessness of the first responders who rushed into danger to help others, to the simple acts of kindness from strangers around the world. Our response as a united front to this tragedy showcased the resilience of our human spirit. It defined us as a world that refused to be broken — a world that would rebuild and heal. Over the last 20 years, #military forces have been deployed in combat zones across the globe as a result of this day. For our #veterans, September 11 is a reminder of the sacrifices they have made in the aftermath of those attacks — defending our freedoms and pursuing justice. For first responders, it's a testament of their unwavering commitment to the preservation of life and their selfless service. And for each one of us, it’s a connection to our own personal stories, memories and experiences of this tragedy. Just Had a Candid Conversation with Fox2 Now on Blue Star Welcome Week! Did you know? A staggering 1 in 3 military spouses face unemployment, a rate up to six times the national average as of 2022. Reflect on this: Arriving in a new community, having no colleagues or friends, and the daunting task of naming five emergency contacts for your children’s school registration. The challenges persist. A revealing 2022 Blue Star Families Military Lifestyle Survey showed that out of 9,300 military-connected respondents, a mere 33% of active-duty members felt a bond with their local civilian community. As a military brat, this sentiment resonates deeply with me. When asked, “Where are you from?” the answer isn’t simple. Having lived transiently, relocating every few years (or sometimes every few months), the concept of ‘home’ becomes abstract. But the quest for community? It never fades. Military families needn’t “claim” a region to feel its warmth and embrace. They should effortlessly blend into any community they live, work, and play in. My passion? Bridging the gap, tethering people to their community. Helping them discover friendships, resources, and avenues to contribute their unique talents. Maybe it’s my upbringing as a military brat, or perhaps the seasons I’ve endured as a military spouse grappling with isolation and yearning for belonging. So, here’s my plea: Whether you’re a civilian with no direct ties to the military or a long-time resident in a military town, extend your hand in welcome. Greet newcomers with a smile, practice patience with that out-of-state driver in front of you, and get involved in programs that support our military families. Every gesture counts. As we head into the holiday season, many of us are planning gatherings with friends and family, taking time to reflect and give thanks. Yet, for our military families, the holidays can be a time of added stress and financial strain, particularly for those who are separated due to deployments or transitioning out of the military. For the last couple years, I've gotten the chance to volunteer with Operation Homefront, a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to building strong, stable, and secure military families. I'm excited to get to do so again this year. Founded in 2002, Operation Homefront provides crucial support to military families through a range of programs designed to alleviate short-term difficulties and prevent them from becoming long-term hardships. With a remarkable 85% of expenditures going directly to programs and services, the organization has received a 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator for 11 consecutive years. In the Omaha area? Good news! Operation Homefront is giving away free Thanksgiving meals to military families who meet certain eligibility criteria. This program, known as Holiday Meals for Military, is a small but impactful way to say thank you for the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women. I think they're near max capacity - take a peek soon if needed. **Eligibility:** - Post 9/11 wounded, ill, or injured service members of any rank, both currently serving and those no longer serving in the military. - All ranks, Active Duty, Guard, and Reserves, in any duty status. - Transitioning service members within 12 months of their discharge/retirement date. This can be a difficult day for anyone who has lost someone who was a veteran or was on active duty. If you are finding this day emotionally challenging, consider exploring some ways that you can take care of yourself. You could: - Take a walk or go for a run🚶♂️ - Call a friend to talk 📞 - Take a nap 🛌 - Light a candle in remembrance of your loved one 🕯️ - Eat a special meal or favorite food🍽️ - Write a letter to them or to a current service member✍️ - Do something that your loved one enjoyed in honor of them 🎨 If you haven't lost someone who was in the military, you may be unsure of how you can help those who are grieving during the holiday. The most important thing you can do is just acknowledge the range of feelings they may be having. Reach out, if you are able, to let them know you care about them and that you are available to talk or be with them if that would feel supportive and helpful. Never take the privileges we enjoy for granted; instead, make an effort to be worthy of their sacrifices. Let's work together to create a society that is based on harmony, empathetic kindness, and understanding. May we choose loving communication and compassion over indifference in a world full of conflicts.
