Had a fantastic time at a roundtable event organized by Steve Chiama! It was an inspiring opportunity to connect with fellow founders in the DMV area. 👏 Sharing experiences, both the triumphs and challenges, is invaluable. Every conversation is an opportunity to grow and learn. A big shoutout 📣 to Chelsey Hayes, Ronald Klatt, marissa misner, TAREK EL-ASHRY, MBA for their insightful contributions. Some days I tune into LinkedIn and feel like all the event advice is saying we're all doing it wrong. We're not embracing the latest trend or fad. And it can be discouraging. But then I remember the feeling of walking by a table of academics, talking about something I truly don't understand, and think "Nope. THIS is why we do events. To bring people together to talk about what matters to THEM." And it's not about how long the keynote was, or if the registration page has 2 fields or 15 to enter. It's about how we bring communities together and what is important to THEM. Events aren't meant to all be designed in the same way. When we are talking about trends in the industry we need to keep in mind that the entire event needs to be designed for that particular community. That is where the gold is found.

This might feel like an ironic/hypocritical post from me, but founders, I hope you know you don’t have to go to every event out there. And in many cases, it’s negative signal to investors if you do. I’ve got a bigger post in my head on events and how they should fit into everyone’s game plan, but I see so many events popping up (partially our fault?) and I worry that the earliest founders are being misled on the best places to spend their time. As with just about everything, this is a very nuanced topic, one that I care a lot about because I think community is vital for a founder’s journey, but it can also be a huge distraction. To be clear, events have their place in building your business for sure, and they definitely have a key place in the basic human need for friends/community. Point is, we should be extremely thoughtful how we use our time and what makes it above the bar.

There's a "how to network" community post going around. It's a mess. The mess that it's turned into really illuminates this major societal level problem (that may be specific to the US, idk) we are right in the middle of. Serious folks with years of experience laying out step by step guides about how to prep for a networking event. What to research, questions to develop to ask people, stories of your own to write down and be ready to pull out on a moments notice, etc etc. All this advice encourages us to focus so intently on ourselves, on what we can bring to the table, on the opportunity of it all for OURSELVES. And here's the problem: all this prep, all this focus on being "ready" misses the humanity of it all. Save the prepared questions with research into their background for a formal setting. Smile. Laugh. Listen. Ask questions. That's how humans build connection. That's how people will remember you. Before politics I worked in summer camps. And I'm a pretty loud human. So, there was a bunch of people I worked with who knew me for my laugh, who sought me out to get to know me, because of how my laugh made them feel. That human connection helped me get to know these folks and learn who they were (one of these folks turned into my wife!). It turns out that being human and putting humanity first, will help you accomplish your goals! So, the moral of the post, don't listen to that community note, be a good human, and make sure you go work at summer camp! 😋

What is NEXT TEN? 🤔 Well...To answer that we'd have to tell you why we started this community: 1. We're tired of going to networking events where people say "Let's connect!" But NEVER do! 2. We're tired of going to networking events and we just end up with a stack of business cards. 3. We're tired of watching boring panel discussions where each panelist has to answer the "What would you tell your younger self?" question. 4. We're tired of there being no follow through after an inspiring event without any application of how to practically put everything we learned into place. 5. We're tired of making surface level connections. We're doing this because: 1. WE want to actually make a connection. 2. WE want to create a community that is focused on exchanging value (NOT one way). 3. WE want to create something exciting and memorable. 4. WE want to establish a connection that goes beyond just an event. 5. WE want you to live out your best life! And we want to be the platform that made that happen. I want to hear more stories of failures. All the webinars, conferences, etc. - they are always stories of great success that often seem like the team or speaker faced little to no issues and everyone found their insights inspiring and they had great impact. I don't learn much from these types of stories. Tell me about the failures along the way. What decisions did you make that didn't pan out and what did you learn from it that you would change next time? What stakeholder issues did you face and what did you try - was it successful or did you have to try several methods, or abandon that effort to focus on others? What methods did you try that failed and why do you think they failed? Tell me about your failures, mistakes, and what you learned - and maybe as a community we can make better decisions and learn from our mistakes vs. solely focusing on our success (those are good too, but not at the expense of never hearing about mistakes/things that didn't work out).
