Understanding Efficiency Ratings of Furnaces and Boilers The efficiency of a heating system is measured by Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency or AFUE. This rating can be found on the yellow Energy Guide label attached to furnaces and boilers. AFUE is the measurement of how effectively a furnace or boiler is able to convert energy from fuels into heat over a typical one-year period. The current minimum AFUE rating, dictated by the US Department of Energy, is 80%, and the highest rating of 100 % is met by modern electric models. High-efficiency systems do not exhaust condensing gases but instead move them to a second heat exchanger, which uses the heat from the exhaust to increase their efficiency. Reduce Energy Costs and Carbon Emissions (part 2) Another application when looking into boiler economizers is pre-heating boiler feedwater. Here's how it typically works: 1. Location & function: The economizer is installed directly in the flue gas stack, between boiler (s) and termination. Hot flue gases pass through the economizer before being expelled into the atmosphere. 2. Heat Exchange: As the hot flue gases flow through the economizer, they transfer heat to the modules within the VHX unit. At the same time, the cold feedwater for the boiler flows through these tubes in a separate path. 3. Preheating Feedwater: The heat from the flue gases is transferred to the feedwater, which raises its temperature significantly before entering the boiler. This preheating process reduces the amount of fuel needed by the boiler to raise the water temperature to the desired level for steam production. 4. Improved efficiency: This preheating process effectively decreases the energy required (therms used), making the existing boiler more efficient, and reduces the carbon emissions that would have been created by a whole other process.
