Indian hospitality giant OYO has acquired Paris-based premium rental homes company CheckMyGuest for Rs 230 crore in a mix of cash and stock. The development comes after the company raised Rs 1,457 crore (approximately $175 million) at a valuation of $2.37 billion. According to the media reports, CheckMyGuest was previously valued at $110 million. The acquisition includes the housing renovation business HMG (formerly HelpMyGuest) and the luxury rental apartment management company Studio Prestige, according to The Arc's report. As of March 2024, OYO operated around 85,000 homes, mainly in Europe, and 18,000 hotels in India and Southeast Asia. The company has made several European acquisitions since 2021 to expand its presence in Croatia, Germany, Denmark, Spain, and Austria. The acquisition includes Checkmyguest's associated businesses, such as the housing renovation firm HMG and luxury rental apartment management company Studio Prestige. This move follows OYO's recent INR 1,457 Cr ($175 million) fundraising in a down round, which lowered its valuation to $2.37 billion. The deal is part of OYO's strategy for global expansion, allowing it to acquire premium home inventory in Paris. Despite reporting its first profitable fiscal year in FY24, OYO's revenue from operations saw a slight decline, reflecting challenges in adding new hotels to its inventory. People think of entrepreneurship as a game of risk and reward. Experiencing it though is more like an ancient hunter exposed to elements of nature. Sometimes these “elements” are the market’s whims, sometimes they are small things that blindside you. But the experience is always intense because you are living on the edge. When WeWork filed for bankruptcy a couple days back, I discovered the news past-midnight. Usually it’d just be news - analyze, maybe learn, and then go to sleep. But this time it wasn’t. My team works out of a WeWork facility in India. At 1 am, I am left wondering what their bankruptcy could mean for our business. When a problem strikes, the first act of any sincere entrepreneur is to blame themselves! So I did, for not following the WeWork development. But October had been a brutally busy month, I couldn’t have tracked one more thing. Then, we dive into anxiety. Which I did, because my cofounder who’d have his ear closer to the ground on these matters, was traveling and unreachable. Then we do the thing we really need to. Accept. So I breathed in and accepted that we might need a new space. Bingo! Problem right-sized. Now it doesn’t feel like an existential threat anymore, so I can act on what needs to be done. Which was 60 minutes of researching alternative office spaces, bankruptcy laws and company ownerships across the US and India. Finally, reached a point of total assurance that WeWork India is independent, profitable and not impacted by the US filing. At 3 am, I hit the bed. Knowing how REAL life feels when you run a business. Everything matters, all the time.
